“Oh,” I nod, trying to remember the parking lot or even the driving lesson.

“You don’t remember?” She laughs, shaking her head. “Some guy knocked on the window asking to clean the windshield and you almost ran him over.”

I force a laugh as I take a bite. “Sounds like me.”

“Whoever gets to teach her, make sure you wear a helmet,” she jokes as she goes back to eating her food.

I’m in a daze until Bianca leaves with Scott.

Thankfully, my oblivious friend is just the right amount of tipsy to not notice I’m running on autopilot. I can’t find the memory anywhere in my head of ever being behind a driver's wheel. Whispers of memories tickle my ear as I remember my mom telling me that we have to pack and leave. Something seems so close, some type of reminder or warning that one day I may need to get somewhere quickly and not be able to wait on a ride.

“Hey,” I hear and I look over my shoulder at Asher, realizing I’m standing in the middle of the hallway and haven’t gone in my room yet. “You alright?”

I see the cracked door down the end of the hall from the surveillance room and assume Eli and Ax are eavesdropping. I force a smile and nod my head to Asher but he shakes his head at me.

“You are a terrible liar,” he chuckles, and tilts my chin up to face him. “You can’t remember your mom teaching you to drive can you?”

I shake my head lightly. “That’s weird, right?” I whisper nervously. “That I just… have forgotten her so much.”

“You forgot events, not her. You’ll never forget her.”

I nod my head, trying to feel comfort but instead feeling empty.

“Do you think…” I hesitate, and he just tucks hair behind my ear waiting for me to go on. “Do you think something bad happened?”

When he doesn’t answer, I sigh.

“What could possibly be worse than what’s already happened?” I groan. “I’m stuck between trying so hard to find the memories and just…”

“Sticking your head in the sand?” Asher chuckles softly and I smile sadly up at him.

“Essentially.”

“Don’t rush yourself, Kate. Maybe it’s just not time for you to remember just yet. One thing at a time.”

I swallow the lump in my throat and nod my head at him.

One day at a time.

“Would you sleep with me tonight?” I ask, as my cheeks redden and Asher grins.

“I was hoping you’d ask that,” he winks.

“Asher Maxwell!” I yell, laughing as he tosses me over his shoulder.

He swats at my butt making me yelp. “Sleep Asher! Just sleep!”

“Mhm, anything you say, babe. Just make sure you yell my name as loud as you yell Eli’s.”

I look up from staring at Asher’s back only long enough to see Ax and Eli standing in the doorway of the control room. I’d beembarrassed, so embarrassed, if not for the heated looks on their faces.

Asher doesn’t push anything and instead holds me after kissing the top of my head. I fall asleep in his arms, but when I wake in the morning my face reddens as I realize my hand is draped over his boxers.

And he’s hard.

I move my hand only to hear him chuckle.

“Sorry, babe,” he says with little to no sympathy in his voice. “I tried to move you a few times but you just kept finding your way back.”
