She laughs but Asher cuts her off. “Just let it be known, I have nothing to do with this,” he says, holding up his hands as though surrendering.

“I was hoping I could borrow your pool this weekend,” she grins.

Ax glares at her. “Why?”

“For your favorite niece's 9th birthday party.”

Ax groans. “How many kids?”

“Only a handful!”

“Jayla.”

She laughs. “Like a dozen or so.”

Ax looks like he’d rather shove his head in a blender and I try to hide my amusement. His dirty look tells me I’m not doing well at hiding it though.

“Fine. I want them gone by sunset though. It’s not a sleepover.”

Jayla rolls her eyes at him. “You’re such a grump.”

“That’s a weird way to say thank you,” he shouts over his shoulder as he heads out of the room.

She laughs and I shake my head at him. “I didn’t know you had a daughter,” I tell her sitting at the counter.

She pulls out her phone to show me a photo. “Her name’s Jewel.”

“She’s beautiful. She looks just like you.”

Jayla laughs. “She would die if she heard you say that. I have to head out though, her karate class will be letting out soon.”

She hugs Asher and waves goodbye as she heads for the door. “You’ll love her. She’s a firecracker. And she loves irritating Ax.”

I grin. “Sounds like my kind of girl.”

Asher heads out to the gym, after many failed attempts to get me to join him, and I find myself wandering around looking forEdgar. I realize I haven’t seen him in a few days and when I don’t see him playing cards with the security guard out front I frown. I knock on Ax’s door and he opens it, surprising me with his sharp appearance.

“Looking fancy,” I tease him and he smirks.

“Control yourself.”

I laugh loudly, shaking my head at him. “Never mind, no more compliments for you, jerk.”

“Did you knock for any reason other than to check me out?”

“That was hardly the reason,” I roll my eyes.

“So, you were checking me out,” he grins. “Careful Eli and Asher may get jealous.“

“You’re such an ass,” I snap, spinning on my heel.

I’m almost to my door when I remember why I went to his room in the first place. I find him leaning against his doorway smirking proudly and waiting. “Forget something?”

“Did you fire Edgar?”

Ax’s face hardens. “No. He’s taking a vacation.”

“Edgar never takes a vacation.”
