Adrian sat quietly, staring off into the distance.

“Ah, yeah,” Adrian said. “I guess I figured you might choose not to eavesdrop.”

Luna chuckled. “I knew you were the alpha,” Luna said. “But would you really give me rule over your pack without knowing anything about me?”

“That’s a conversation for another day. Right now, just let us know if there’s anything we can do to make your stay here more comfortable.”

As she watched the youthful exuberance on display, the children leaping and lunging at each other, recoiling against minor abrasions and knocks, something dawned on Luna.

“You don’t intend to let me leave, do you?”

“That’s another conversation for another day,” Adrian repeated. “But I don’t intend on keeping you here against your will. Though even I would be hard-pressed to ignore the callings of fate.”

Luna nodded, though she wasn’t sure she agreed.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, my pups are getting quite antsy without their instructors,” Adrian said. “Would you mind?”

Luna shook her head, but as he stood to walk away, Luna found herself tugging on his shirt.

Adrian looked back in amusement. “Yes?”

“I just …” Luna started to speak, then stopped herself.

“Go on.”

“I was wondering … could I go back to the cabin now? There’s really nothing for me to do out here.” She worried that Victor might show up. If he saw her, the bastard would probably run, and she’d lose her opportunity to surprise him.

Adrian chuckled, looking at the children standing at the ready, then at his enforcers who waited for his command.

“No, I don’t think so,” Adrian said.

“But …”

“Why don’t you just relax and watch? You might learn something. I imagine even somebody as skilled as you could benefit from learning a few more techniques.”

She wasn’t sure how he had her pegged for a fighter, but she nodded. Right now, she needed to make nice if she was to get what she wanted.

“Besides, all of my enforcers are here training this group of children,” Adrian added. “Unless you’d have them be unprepared for the dangers our kind faces?”

Luna shook her head, then watched the far child who hadn’t joined in on the training activities. Adrian walked away finished with the conversation. All she wanted was to find a safe place to lay her head and regroup.

Taking another whiff, she realized Victor wasn’t near here, nor had he been for some time. He left an old inferior wolf to fight her instead of confronting her himself. Chicken shit. Fury coursed through her veins at the thought of the bastard resting on his laurels, unconcerned with the people he hurt so badly.

She wanted to press his face into the dirt. She wanted to show him the same pain he had shown her, taking his life from him as callously as he had taken Darius’s.

Luna fiddled with her hands, finding herself bored and sitting in the middle of nowhere.

All she knew was that she didn’t want to be anybody’s mate. She wanted to watch Victor’s eyes as the life drained from his body.

“All right, Gregory,” Adrian said in the distance.

Luna looked up as Adrian, with a wooden sword in hand, stood over the child on the edge of everything.

“I’m sorry,” the child said. “I wanted to play with the other children. I just …”

“It’s okay, Gregory. You don’t need to explain yourself.”

Gregory nodded, snorting loudly. She couldn’t tell if he was fighting a cold or trying not to cry.
