“Oh, that’s right. Jamie wanted Chase, but he wanted nothing to do with you, and you hate it. You are so damn jealous he chose me over you.” Then my head pivots to Jessie. “And you…” I look her up and down, sneering at her revealing outfit. “You wanted Jeff but he never noticed you because he was focused on Melody.”

Melody steps up beside me and we link arms. “What can I say, Mackenzie? Jeff and Chase have class. They’re not into vindictive tramps that bully others to feel better about themselves.”

“Think what you want.” Jamie has finally rebounded from our insults and is glaring at us with pure hatred. “The only reason Alex was interested in you, Mackenzie, is because he knew you were a virgin. He just wanted to pop your cherry and dump you.” Then she turns to Melody. “Brady dumped you because you wouldn’t give it up. He got tired of waiting and moved on.”

Melody raises her brows, meeting my gaze. “Am I supposed to be insulted by her words? I dated Brady briefly last year, but it didn’t take long to figure out what he wanted. She’s stupid enough to believe him when he said he dumped me, but the truth is, I dumped him after he took me to the movies, then spent two hours begging me to have sex with him.”

I snort, shaking my head. “What an idiot.”

Jessie steps closer, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Sounds like sour grapes. I think the two of you settled because you couldn’t get Brady or Alex.”

Melody and I exchange a look, bursting into laughter. “Oh my God. Are you serious?” Melody gasps, laughing so hard she’s crying.

I’m holding my side and wiping my eyes. “Oh, hell. She is.” I burst into laughter again. Alex doesn’t remotely compare to Chase.

Jamie and Jessie are fuming, their faces scarlet from anger, which only makes me laugh harder.

Once I finally get myself composed, I step into Jamie’s personal space, my face contorted from rage. “I used to believe you were my friend. Now, I see how wrong I was.” I shake my head, sadness, hurt, and a sense of betrayal rolling through me. “You were never my friend.”

Jamie sneers at me, tossing a lock of hair over her shoulder. “I felt pity for you after the accident that killed your brother. You were so grateful that I stayed by your side. Honestly, it was pathetic.”

I gasped, rearing back as though she slapped me. Her words cut deep, although I hate I just revealed how much they hurt.

She crosses her arms over her chest, her expression haughty. “I was planning on distancing myself from you after you finally healed. But then Alex came up with a plan. He wanted you and planned to give me Chase.”

I stare at her like she’s insane. “How did he think he was going to accomplish that?”

“Alex wanted you because you were a virgin. He planned to fuck and dump you. He was planning to try and convince Chase how much you hated him and how wrong it was for him to want his foster sister. Once he took your virginity, he knew Chase would be hurt and betrayed. That’s when I was going to offer him all the comfort he needed.”

Rage erupts inside me with a vengeance that surprises even me. I’m not hurt by Alex’s plans. I’m fucking furious about her plans for Chase. The sickening sense of jealousy crashing through me at the thought of her pretending to care for and seduce Chase makes me more irate than I’ve ever been.

I raise my hand, about to slap her, when my wrist is grabbed by a familiar, large hand. Amber musk flows through my nose, calming me even before I turn my attention to him.

“Chase.” My eyes lock with his. “What are you doing here?”

“Jeff and I took the dogs for a ride. We wanted to see if you and Mel wanted to go to the park and take them for a walk.” He flashes me a gentle smile, his low and soothing voice wrapping around me like a warm blanket. “Jamie’s not worth it, angel. She’s trying to piss you off so you’ll hit her and she can scream assault.” He glances at Jamie and Jessie, disdain radiating from every pore of his body before turning back to me. “I never would have fallen for her bullshit. Even if…” His Adam’s Apple bobs as he swallows hard. Blowing out a breath, whiskey irises full of love envelop me. “Even if you would’ve slept with Alex, which I did everything I could to prevent, you were the only girl in my heart. You’ve owned it since the day I laid eyes on you.”

My rage dissipates as he lets go of my wrist. Stepping into him, I wrap my arms around his neck, not giving a damn about Jamie or Jessie. “I love you, Chase. You have a maturity that astounds me.”

He grins. “I’m better at giving advice than I am at taking my own. I mean, look what happened in school with Alex.”

I laugh. “You’re protective as hell. Not necessarily a bad thing… Unless you get tossed in jail and suspended from school.”

Chase snorts, rubbing his nose against mine. I hear the two hens cackling and making remarks, but it’s background noise that I’m ignoring. Being in Chase’s orbit is better than anything those two bitches have to say.

“Funny, Kenz. You think you’re a comedian, huh?” His hand is on my side, tickling me, and I release a surprised squeal before squirming and laughing, trying to get away.

“Okay, I surrender. Stop.” Tears leak from my eyes from laughing so hard.

“Since you surrendered…” He stops tickling me. Cupping my face, he plants a kiss on my lips before bending over and picking up the books I’d dropped.

“I don’t remember dropping them.” Then I stare at him suspiciously. “How did you know Mel and I were here? I told you we were going to do some shopping downtown, but I didn’t say where we were going.”

Tucking my books under his arms, he chuckles. “You must not know me. I track your phone, angel. I need to make sure you’re safe.”

“Stalker,” I joke, fisting his sweatshirt and pulling him against my mouth. “I can’t be mad about it since I know you’re concerned about my safety.”

“Always, love.” His lips move against mine, slow and deep, and I forget where I’m at until he pulls back, and I’m left in a daze. “Now let’s go pay and get out of here.”
