Page 38 of Stuck Behind Her

Lorenzo looked pretty upset. And all over again, all the guilt towers on each other inside me. He’s hurt. Of course he is. How do I expect him to react?

I knew she was bound to ask me. I’m his best friend. Well, maybe not anymore. I’m such a bad friend. I just let him go, I gave him no answer or explanation or anything. God, the more I think about it, the more I mess up.

“Well, you’re asking the wrong person, because I haven’t spoken to him since Wednesday.” I tell her, trying to seem like I’m joking. She stops walking for a second, staring at me.

“Wait, have you guys had a fight?” she asks, surprised.

“No. No, we haven’t,” I tell her. We aren’t fighting. We just haven’t talked. I haven’t talked to him, and I know he won’t talk to me until I make the first move because he knows I won’t ignore him without reason.

“Is that why you weren’t with us yesterday?” she asks again. I turn my head and nod slightly.

“It’s nothing, though. Everything is okay. I’m just trying to process some things. It’ll all be fine again soon. Of course, if Lorenzo wants everything to be fine,” I explain. My head moves back to face front and we start walking again.

“I knew something was wrong between you two. Lorenzo was upset, you weren’t there, and you’re upset.” She puts everything together, still strolling through the halls. I cross my arms across my chest. “I mean—I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I’m sure everything is going to be okay between you two,” she rephrases.

I smile at her one more time before we spot Elias and Lorenzo. I stop, looking at both of them for a second before turning my whole body around. “You should go. I’ll be okay, don’t worry about me,” I tell her. She also stops, turning around slightly.

“Are you sure? I can stay with you. They won’t mind,” she offers.

“I’m sure. I need some time alone anyway,” I convince her.

She waves and runs toward them. I take a small glance and spot Lorenzo, looking right at me. I’m too far away to see the expression on his face, but I turn around completely until I’m facing the other way. No matter how far I am, I can still see the hurt look on his face. I know I need to talk to him, even if it means losing him. Even if it means he’s angry at me, I need to make sure he’s okay. I’d rather he be angry than not be okay.

I walk back home after school, stepping between the trees to get to the back of the house. I take out the keys from my bag, spinning them around my fingers until I get to the door. I have five keys on my keychain. The keychain is of a small flower with the letters V and L. Valentina and Lorenzo. Lorenzo got it for me not long ago, to remind me that we would always be friends.

Another cold shudder hits me as I enter the key through the keyhole. I stare at the flower for a while. We will always be friends. No matter what. That’s what he told me. But what if he hadn’t loved me at the time? He never would’ve thought something like this would happen. He never thought I wouldn’t fall in love with him after everything he did.I finally turn the key and push the door open.

I walk into the house, taking my jacket and shoes off. I pick at my wig, also taking it off to let my hair breathe. Just as I’m on my way to my room, Ellie comes out of nowhere and hugs me from my right side. I’m confused at first, but I accept the hug and let my arms surround her as best I can. Her head presses softly into my upper waist.

“Hey. You okay?” I ask her, lowering my head to look at her.

“I wanted to say sorry. Mom said you were upset, and that it had something to do with what I said,” she says, keeping her head straight.

“Mom told you that?” I ask her. I know Mom wouldn’t outright tell Ellie that what she said upset me.

“Well, she said you were upset because you and Lorenzo were in a fight, and you started fighting after we went to the park.” I laugh at her words. She then pulls back, turning me with her before she looks up at me. “Are you mad at me?”

“Of course not. Why would I be mad at you?”

“Because I was eavesdropping on Mom. And because I told you something that made you and Lorenzo fight,” she replies. I smile softly, moving all the hair from the front of her face.

“You shouldn’t be eavesdropping, but no, I’m not mad. You didn’t know what you were saying. And Lorenzo and I aren’t fighting. We’re just taking a small break to process everything,” I assure her, partly lying. I need to process everything. Lorenzo is probably waiting for me to talk to him. Or maybe he doesn’t want to talk anymore. Maybe he’s thought about it as much as I have, and realized how unfair it is to him. Ellie’s face brightens up.

“So you won’t be taking away my camera?” she asks.

“Why would I ever take away your camera?” I question. She shrugs her shoulders, and another laugh leaves my mouth. She squeezes me tightly one more time, then runs off to her room. My smile slowly fades after she leaves. I need to think about something else. Anything else. I continue to my room and grab my rose gold laptop from on top of my desk. I then sit on my bed, with my back resting on the headboard.

Work. That should distract me. The opened screen reveals some unread emails, and I decide to look through them. The less I think about everything, the less stressful it’ll become.

A buzz comes from my phone, vibrating slightly on the bed sheets. I pick it up. The notification reveals a message from an unknown number. Is this another fan who somehow thinks they found my number?

I open the message and read the contents.

Unknown:Hello.

Unknown:Is this Violet Hart?

I reread the message, confused. Who’s texting ‘me’. And how do they have my number? Even when I’m using another name or a different disguise, I don’t give out my number like it’s nothing.
