“I’m not sure, Sir,” was his nervous response. “Lots of bodies around. Hard to tell.”

Huffing in an annoyed breath, I fetched my phone from my suit pocket, tapping on Detective Daniels’ number.

“I see you,” he said as soon as he answered. “Not here though. There are too many witnesses. Drive at least two blocks ahead and park away from the crowd’s eye. I’ll be there in a minute.”

I hung up the phone and gave the order to Gregory, reminding him to keep the back doors unlocked before the partition had fully raised and locked in place. It wasn’t five minutes after weparked when the door on my right opened, and the detective slipped inside.

“Well?” I furiously admonished, my dark eyes flashing.

“We’re still investigating,” he said calmly, carefully, as he reached deep inside his pocket and pulled out a writing pad.

He nodded as he offered it to me, insisting I open it.

“We have a few witnesses who made it out just before things fell to shit,” he continued as my eyes skimmed down the first page. “Unfortunately, they weren’t much help. Nobody got a good look at the guy, only that he was wearing a cowboy hat and a trench coat and was packing someseriousheat.”

“Was he alone?” I flipped to the second page, answering my own question as Daniels shook his head.

“There was another guy with him, also wearing a cowboy hat and trench coat.”Huh… So they were dressed identically. Interesting.“Problem is, none of them recall seeing either men leave the club, which means—”

“They escaped,” I interrupted him.

Daniels gave me a look that neither agreed nor disagreed with me. “Possibly. They either escaped, or they never made it out.”

Meaning their bodies could have burned to ash right along with my precious club.

“And Jace?” I wondered, a hint of excitement dancing through my blood as I tapped my finger against the top of the third page. “It says here his car is in the parking lot.”

Daniels offered me a worthless frown and nodded. “It is.”

“And?” I pressed; my face hard as I daggered him sharply.

“I don’t have any proof to give you, but what I can tell you is that if he was in that club when all that shit went down, then I’m sorry, Damien, I doubt he made it out. If he did, then I suspect he would’ve come back to retrieve his car by now. Have you heard from him?”

I shook my head. “I haven’t. I’ve called several times and his phone is off.” That part was technically a lie but Daniels didn’t have to know that. He worked for me. Not the other way around.

Daniels’ frown deepened. “Do you have any idea who could’ve done this?”

“There might be a few… nuisances,” I thickly replied, my jaw set.

“What do you want me to do?”

“You tell the media and the people what theywantto hear. Leave the rest to me.”

“Damien—”

“You’re dismissed, Daniels.” I tossed the pad over to him and thanked him for his services.

He sighed and then opened the door. “I’ll be in contact.”

“Gregory,” I called out, hitting the button to lower the partition.

“Yes, Sir?”

“Take me home. I have some business to handle.”

“Right away, Damien.”

I raised the partition and then sent off a text as I sat back, grinding my teeth.
