There was something about the feral satisfaction engulfing his tone that had this unsettling feeling stewing in my gut, making me feel sick all of a sudden. I expected him to sound staggered, maybe even a little destructively flustered. But as I stepped inside the room, digesting the adoration in his eyes as they repeatedly swept me over head to toe, I had to force myself to choke down the fearful lump building in my throat.

Something wasn’t right.

“Samara…” He addressed me fondly, rising to his feet and adjusting the tie on his suit. “You got my message. I am truly amazed at how smart you are.”

My heart sank.

Oh no…Fuck.

No, no, no!

I was wrong. This meeting wasneveraimed at the Ravagers. It was meant forme.

I did a quick sweep over the small office, spotting a small couch and a table in front of it with two glasses and a large canister of booze on top of it. My heart sank lower when my eyes landed on Damien’s plus one. It wasn’t Jace.

It was fucking Banjo.

Banjo offered me a wicked smile and a little wave, which had me fighting not to curl my nose up in disgust at him.

Play the fucking part, Samara.

“Of course, I got your message.” I trained my gaze back on Damien and gave him a big, sweet smile, innocently lifting my shoulders. “This calls for a celebration, does it not?”

Heat flashed in Damien’s eyes, the sight making my skin crawl unbearably beneath my dress.

Isaac was right.

Wearing this dress was a huge fucking mistake.

Everything about this meeting was WRONG and it was my own fault for not catching onto Damien’srealscheme.

“It does.” Damien grinned big and sat down on the couch, patting the cushion next to him as an invitation for me to sit. Still forcing my smile, I uncomfortably sat down and placed the keys and my wallet on the table before reaching out to accept the filled glass Damien had offered me.

We clanked glasses, and it was all I could do not to spit the vile taste out of my mouth thanks to the vicious burn extending down my throat with each painful gulp.

Whatever this shit was, it wasstrong.

“I have to say, my Queen, you look absolutely stunning tonight.”

Damien placed his glass down and leaned toward me, tucking a curl behind my ear as his other hand planted itself against my exposed thigh. His hand trailed higher, straying closer to the three blades hidden underneath my dress. He touched them, raising his brows, and then took it upon himself to inch the fabric up even higher despite my protest. I internally cursed like a fucking mad woman when he removed each one and placed them down on the table. That was the only protection I had on me.

“There is no need for weapons. You’re safe here.”

Bull-fucking-shit!

“What can I say?” I smiled, playing it off as I leaned closer to him. “It’s become a bit of a habit since I started the academy.”

He returned my smile with an even darker one. “What news do you have for me? I’m sure you’re aware Finn is dead, so there’s no use beating around the bush.”

My heart jolted at the mention of Finn. It was hard reeling back the tears.

“I know he was your friend,” he whispered softly, the remorse in his tone faker than the act I was putting on. “But Finn was a traitor, Samara. I’m going to ask you a question and I want you to answer it honestly. Did you know Finn was a Ravager?”

“I didn’t.” I kept my eyes fiercely locked on his, refusing to break and knowing I had to be extremely careful with my words. “It wasn’t until I received word from Xavier’s boys that Finn had been killed when the truth came out.”

“So, you understand why I had to kill him, yes?”

“I do,” I nodded. “You made the right call.” Saying those words butchered me because I knew Phantom and the others could hear everything we were saying. But I wanted—no,neededthem to understand and trust I was only saying these things to save my own ass. To save us all. I had no idea this meeting tonight was secretly intended for me and me alone. I truly thought I was saving them from being slaughtered like pigs.
