What will he say when I tell him I got the job under false pretenses?

That my uncle’s company is one that he is taking over? That I intended to gather intel about his company to ruin the deal?

He will say that I lied to him, that I deceived him. And he will be right. He will never trust me again. The relationship that hasn’t even started will be over. This secret is wearing me down and creating a colossal hole in my heart.

The only thing that is keeping me from completely falling apart in guilt is that I haven’t actually done anything wrong. Well, other than getting the job. I wasn’t completely qualified for it and had to lie on the application. But I’ve done a great job so far. Oh, and I made copies of the confidential files, which is a huge no-no. But I haven’t done anything with them, and I plan to give them back to Jake.

Okay, so when I think of it like that, it’s actually pretty incriminating.

I grab my phone to check my texts. Sure enough, there are a bunch from Jess.

Don’t leave me hanging!

What happened????

Where are you beyoch?

It’s been HOURS. Why are you ignoring me?????????

If you don’t respond soon, I’m coming over to get you!

Ugh, Jess is going to be mad at me. I listen for the sound of the shower. Thankfully, Jake is still in there. I better call Jessica before she sends in the troops to get me.

I dial her, and she picks up on the first ring.

“What the hell have you been doing!” she yells at me.

“I’m so sorry that I didn’t call you. I didn’t have time to text you. I only have a few minutes, so I can’t really get into everything that has happened,” I say apologetically.

“If you think you’re gonna pawn me off with that sorry excuse, you are in for a big surprise. I was worried about you last night,” she says with anger in her voice. Jess seems pissed at me.

“Jake and I slept together,” I tell her as though that explains it all.

“You don’t say. I kinda figured that out when you didn’t come home last night.” I’m pretty sure I detect more than a hint of snark in her tone.

“Okay, okay, I’m very sorry. I know you were worried. My ringer was off, and well, we kinda got involved, and I couldn’t exactly tell him to hold on while I text my friend.”

Jess sighs heavily into the phone. “Fine, I forgive you. But I thought you went there to confess your sins and all that jazz. I guess he took it better than you thought. And so you decided to hump like spring bunnies onsteroids?”

“Who said we humped like bunnies on steroids?” I laugh.

“Well, since you’ve been busy since last night until now, that’s my assumption. Otherwise, you’d have called me before now. But, seriously, I guess he took the news better than you thought?”

“I didn’t tell him,” I say simply.

“You didn’t tell him? Oh my God, Lana. How could you not tell him?” I hear the surprise in her voice.

“I know, I know. I’m going to tell him today.”

“Before or after you have sex again with the poor guy?” she asks, shocked.

“I don’t know if I can. I don’t know what to do now. I’ve messed everything up. What if I just don’t say anything, destroy the file? Maybe he’ll never find out what I did.”

“That’s one option.”

“What else can I do?” I plead.

“Look, you have two options. One. You can tell him the truth and risk losing your job, and Jake may not forgive you. Your uncle will likely lose his business anyway. Or two. You can destroy the file, never say a word, and hope he doesn’t find out. If he ever does, there’s no telling what he’ll do.”
