“Yes, we’ll just see,” I say, winking.

“I should have known you were trouble the moment I met you,” Lana teases.

“And I should have known that I loved you from the moment I met you,” I respond.

“You always know just what to say to make me feel all mushy inside.”

“Not always, but I try.” I reach over and take her hand. “It’s hard to believe that we’ve only known each other for eight months.”

“The best eight months of my life,” she responds. “Sometimes, it’s hard to remember what life was like before you.”

Suddenly, I’m nervous. Lana is more precious to me than anything, and I can’t imagine a world where she isn’t by my side. I can only hope that she feels the same.

“Have I told you how much I love you?”

“Only a million times,” she says as she smiles sweetly at me. “But I’ll never get tired of hearing it.”

“You don’t know how happy I am to hear that.” I clear my throat uneasily, unsure of how to continue. “Because I want to say that to you every day for the rest of our lives.”

“What are you saying?” Lana asks, a sheen of unshed tears in her eyes.

“I think you know what I’m saying.” I get down on my knee in front of her and squeeze her hand. “Lana, I love you. I want to wake up beside you every morning and go to bed with you every night. I want to spoil you with over-the-top ridiculous gifts that you’ll try to force me to take back. I want to spend every minute of every day with you and only you. Lana, will you marry me?”

She looks down at the ring I’ve pulled out of my pocket. I can see the shock in her eyes. The ring is custom-made from a handpicked flawless five-carat solitaire diamond purchased from our family jeweler. The princess cut gem sparkles in the moonlight. A beautiful shimmer of light, which is what Lana is to me.

Now the tears are streaming down her cheeks as I slide the ring on her finger. I’m tempted to reach for her and kiss them away. But I can’t. I’m holding my breath, waiting for her response.

She leans into me and kisses me briefly before pulling back. “Jake, I love you, too. And it would be a dream come true to marry you and to spend the rest of our days making each other happy.”

“Does that mean that your answer is yes?”

“Of course, yes, you crazy man.”

“You’ve made me so incredibly happy,” I tell her. I feel a suspicious moisture filling my eyes, and I try to blink it away.

“I don’t want a long engagement. Would it be too crazy to get married sooner rather than later?” she asks.

“As soon as possible. But first, let’s seal the deal with a kiss.”

I stand up and pull her up to stand in front of me. She reaches up and wraps her arms around my neck and places the sweetest and softest kiss on my lips. I sigh into her mouth and pull her tighter to me.

I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve her. But I hope she never lets me go.
