“I’m late Em, I’ll see you later. We can talk more about the wedding then,” I say smoothly, giving her a quick kiss on the head, and placing her coffee on the desk. I walk around the desk and pick up my keys.

It all happens in slow motion then, as I move away from Em’s side, Emilie looks up, her face freezes, and I can see her cheeks turn pink as I look back at her. She knows who I am! What a relief! She takes a deep breath, her eyes staring right into mine.

“Millie,” I nod to her, my eyes raking over like I need to absorb everything about her… that’s all I say as I walk out the door and head to the pub.

Chapter seven

Shock

Millie

Emma looks at me like something’s funny, her eyes gleaming at me. I can feel my face getting hotter the more she looks at me, how is this happening?!

He remembers me, remembers my name. I can’t speak. All I want to do is leave. I almost stand up, then I remember why I’m here and stay seated, trying not to show the shock and the embarrassment on my face from not only seeing him, but remembering him, for so long it-he-felt like an illusion, maybe even a figment of my imagination. Even bumping into him last night, I didn’t think it was real, but shit me… he remembers my name.

He looked even better than in my dreams. That smile makes my insides tingle. The last time I saw that smile was, well, before it went somewhere very private and I enjoyed every last second of it … oh my god, he said something about a wedding, they must be getting married. Why did he do that? Get engaged, I mean look at her, she is literally stunning, tall, blond and successful, shit I would if I swung that way. Why would he even acknowledge me? Say my name, like nothing happened betweenus. But the way he said my name… Millie, no-one has called me Millie in such a long time…it feels so nice. Oh crap I can feel myself getting redder by the second, from just thinking about it all. I lower my head even further, I can’t look at her now.

“You okay?” Emma says, clearing her throat and smirking at me.

“Um, yes, I’m sorry,” I say, trying to regain some sort of composure if I’m talking to his fiancée.

“No need to apologise, how do you know Jack?” she says with a raised eyebrow, her eyes almost bulging out of her head.

“Well…” What do I tell his fiancée of all people? Oh you know, we had amazing sex over and over again about six years ago. Now I have wild dreams about him, about what he did to me, so much so that I left my shitty life and even shittier boyfriend behind to start afresh, only to bump into Mr Sex God himself here of all places. No I can’t say that, so I say, “We met when I was on holiday once in Ibiza with a bunch of friends. He helped me out of a…situation,” which was the truth, just twisted a little bit with a few omissions.

“Oh wow really? That’s odd, he has never mentioned you, how long ago was it?” She really looks interested and not pissed off, which I expected, and that confuses me a little bit.

“About six years ago maybe? I’m surprised he remembers me really, we only met a couple of times.” Still the truth.

“I definitely want to know more about this,” she says, pointing at me. “And you, but I have another meeting and you need to move into your new place,” she points at me again. I realize I have loads to do tonight before I start work later, plus I need to get some much-needed sleep.

“Oh sorry, yes, sorry I didn’t mean to take up so much of your time, sorry.”

“There is no need to apologise. Here are your keys, this one is the main door, this one is for the apartment, you’re all set.Fancy meeting for a drink tonight?” Wow, I was definitely not expecting that, is this some sort of trick? Maybe… maybe not… she’s been so nice, I don’t want to say no.

“Thank you, you have been wonderful. I’m actually working tonight, but another time? You have my number.” Nodding at the computer, she smiles back at me.

“Brilliant, I’ll call you tomorrow, we can catch up,” she said, looking excited.

“I need to ask actually,” I hesitate for a moment, but I know I need to get this sorted. “Can I book another appointment with you? I would like your advice on another property?”

“Now I’m intrigued, let’s do it over a drink, say…” she glances at her screen “Sunday afternoon?”

“Sounds good to me, where?”

“Do you know a place called the Brasserie?”

“Funnily enough I do, five okay for you?” It’s where I work, I don’t tell her that though.

“Perfect, see you then, Millie,” she says with a chuckle, like she knows something I don’t.

After leaving Emma’s office I head back to the hotel. Packing my things up in my room, I head over to the apartment. I can’t wait to get in, but before I do, I need to grab a few things first. I head to the department store just down the road and pick up some basics, a new duvet, pillows, and a cover set with some sheets. All I want to do is make sure that when I finish my shift tonight, I can go to bed. I desperately need sleep, I can start getting some other stuff tomorrow, but for now, that will be enough.

When I reach the main entrance of the apartment block, I can see that the main door is broken, the lock hanging off, like someone has broken in. So no need to use my key. I walk up the three flights of stairs with my case and my shopping bags, only tofind that my door is open too, I look inside and see a man there, he looks at me.

“You must be… Emilie?” he says after looking at the sheet in his hand.

“Yes, that’s me, who are you? And what are you doing?” Stepping inside and looking around the small space.
