That’s pretty obvious.

I snort, feeling lighter than I have since Cal got that phone call.

“What’s so funny?” Kai asks, apparently not as asleep as I thought he was.

“I think Cal is disappointed you don’t have amnesia, and he can’t come up with crazy schemes to get you to remember me.”

Kai starts to laugh and then groans in pain.

“Shoot. Sorry. Don’t laugh. You broke some ribs.” My hands are hovering over him, not quite touching, but acting like I can magically take the pain away or something.

“What else is wrong with me?” he asks, looking down at the arm that’s wrapped securely against his body. I explain the punctured lung and the surgery he had, plus the one he has to have for his torn bicep.

“Aren’t we due in the studio next week? How can I sing if this lung is going to take six to eight weeks to heal? And how the hell long will my arm take? I can’t play guitar with one arm,” Kai asks, clearly frustrated.

“I don’t know or care. You could’ve died, Kai!. Delaying the album is the last thing I care about right now.”

Kai squeezes my hand and smiles sadly. “I know. I’msorry, mo chridhe. You’re right. That doesn’t matter right now.”

The doctor comes in a few hours later and explains the next surgery. It should be fairly quick, and they scheduled it for first thing in the morning. If everything goes well, Kai can go home by the end of the week. He’ll still have physical therapy and appointments to check how his lung is healing, but they seem confident he’ll make a full recovery.

I’ve beenin this hospital for over a week. By the time I’m discharged, I won’t be able to leave here fast enough. Belle is happy I’m not dead, but I think she’s about to leave me in the morgue if my attitude doesn’t change.

“I’m sorry,” I say to the nurse I just snapped at for the third time in as many minutes. Belle is glaring at me with her arms crossed.

“I get you’re antsy to get home, Mr. Irons,” the nurse says before snatching the discharge papers I just signed. She leaves the room without another word. Not that I blame her.

I sigh and drop my face into my hands. I haven’t slept well the entire time I’ve been here. My mom has been trying to get in to see me, and the police have no leads on who hit me. I just need to get home to my own bed with my girl next to me and get some actual sleep.

I feel the bed sink next to me and Belle’s hand curling into mine. I look up to see a mix of annoyance and understanding on her face. She’s been with me this entire week, only leaving to shower. She slept on the small bed in theroom next to mine once I assured her I wasn’t going to suddenly drop dead.

“I know you’re in a mood because you need sleep and real food, but that isn’t the fault of anyone here.”

“I know. I’m sorry,” I say, kissing her temple.

“I have an idea that might cheer you up,” she says as a devious grin takes over her face. She leans in, whispering her brilliant idea to me, making me laugh.

My girl. She can bring a smile to my face in the worst of times. I fucking love her.

Belle pulls her car into Cal’s driveway. Willa had dropped it off for her earlier in the week for when she needed to take me home.

“You’d make a terrible actor,” Belle says, laughing at the smile that’s already on my face. “You have to act serious if this is going to work.”

“Right,” I nod, smoothing the features in my face out.

I gingerly exit the car and follow Belle into the house. I’m still sore as fuck, but movement gets easier by the day.

“Welcome home!” everyone screams as we enter the house. The usual suspects, Willa, Cal, and Mav are front and center. I also see our new agent and manager, Jon, standing off to the side wearing a shirt with Michael Myers holding a coffee on it. Cal and Belle’s dad, Jason, is standing next to Jon.

Cal immediately rushes up to me. “It’s good to see you alive and kicking, man,” he says, patting me on the back.

“Thanks. Have we met?” I ask him, trying to contain my smile when his face falls and his eyes widen in shock.

“I thought you didn’t have amnesia! Belle said you know who she is!” Cal is balancing on the line of shock and outrage. I look over his shoulder to see a confused Maverick and an excited Willa.
