“Belle!” he yells as he runs to me. “You’re bleeding. Are you ok?”

Kai’s hands graze my entire body as he looks for more injuries. “It’s just my nose.”

He nods and then turns his attention to the patheticexcuse for a human currently trying to sneak away. Kai grabs the back of Brad’s shirt and lifts him off the ground.

“You put your hands on my woman,” Kai seethes.

“She was mine first!” Brad spits back. “I took her virginity! I was inside her first!”

I’m not sure what reaction Brad was expecting, but it didn’t seem to be Kai’s fist in his face. He really looks shocked for someone who was just egging another person on.

The sirens are loud, and I can see the lights flashing right outside of the house. Brad makes one more attempt at scrambling away, but Kai stops him with a swift kick to the nuts. Brad groans and collapses in a heap on the ground just in time for the police to come charging in.

Kai wraps me in his arms. I put my ear to his chest and listen to his heartbeat. It’s racing, but the sound of it causes me to finally break. I sob into his shirt, soaking it through with my blood and tears.

“It’s over, mo chridhe. He can’t hurt you anymore,” Kai says softly, one hand smoothing my hair and the other rubbing circles on the small of my back.

I lean into him, borrowing his strength. In the safety of his arms, I tell him everything.

KAI

I haven’t slept. My eyes haven’t left Belle’s face. She didn’t want to go to the hospital, but I insisted. Her nose isn’t broken, thankfully. She has bruises under her eyes that make her look like a raccoon. There’s one in the shape of a hand around her arm and the entire right side of her face is swollen.

The officer that followed us to the hospital to get her statement said that the station received several phone calls from neighbors about a break-in and dispute in front of the abandoned house. They came in minutes before Willa’s call.

My girl is so fucking brave and so smart. She said she was causing a scene to try to get attention but had no idea if it had worked or not. She knew what she was risking. She knew it would cause Brad to harm her, but at the time, she thought Cal was hurt and in the house.

Speaking of Cal…

I grab my phone to try to text him again. Brad may not have had him, but he’s not here either.

Me

Dude. Where are you? We need to talk.

Cal

I’m fine.

Me

That’s it? You’re not going to explain where you are or why you’re ignoring your sister?

I want to tell the asshole she threw herself into danger for him, but she insisted she wanted to tell him herself.

Cal

No. I’m fine. That’s all you need to know.

What the fuck? It’s so unlike him that I’m actually getting concerned. If Belle wasn’t sound asleep in my arms right now, I would be at his house waiting for him.

“Belle?” I hear Willa call from downstairs. I groan. It’s not the first time I regret giving my friends keys to my house. “Kai! You are not keeping my best friend from me!”

“We’ll be right down!” Belle yells, her voice heavy from sleep.

“I’m sorry. I texted her when we got home to let her know you were fine. Apparently, that wasn’t enough.”
