I hummed slightly under my breath while I studied her. I’m not sure what Hawk ever saw in her other than the obvious big tits, blonde hair, and body because there was no way you could miss the cruelty in her face nor the anger in her eyes when she realised this wasn’t going to be as easy as she thought.

My eyes dropped to the little boy standing quietly next to her. No two-year-old that I knew of was ever this quiet or stood this still and I couldn’t help but wonder what he’d seen in his short life. My heart hurt as he lifted the most beautiful green eyes to mine. They were eyes that I saw every day when I woke up and again before I went to sleep. Eyes that looked at me with love whenever they happened to fall on me.I wanted to cry at the sadness in them. No baby should ever have such a look on their face.

My heart cracked wide open, and I knew there was no way he was going to go back with this she bitch. I got it now what Reaper and Abby meant when they said that they’d loved their adoptedchildren on sight. Blood did not make a difference to our family. Removing my arm from around Hawk, I knelt down, holding my hands out to the little boy, saying softly, “Come here, baby.”

I waited patiently as he studied me and I don’t know what he saw in my face, but his little face crumpled, and tears welled in his eyes as he stumbled to me and into my arms. I picked him up and cuddled him tight into my body. He burrowed his little head into my shoulder, wrapping his arms so tight around my neck it was hard to breathe but I didn’t move him, my nose did wrinkle a bit at the smell, and I wondered when she’d last bathed him. He cried but not a sound left his body and my anger rose again. There was only one way he’d learned not to make a noise when he cried.

Turning to Hawk, his eyes widened at the anger on my face when I spat out, “Do not let her leave, I’ll be back in a minute.”

“What the fuck, you can’t hold me here,” Rachel screeched from behind me as I walked away from them. I stopped by my dad and Reaper, saying fiercely, “She does not leave. Make it happen.”

Getting a nod from both of them, I walked into the café hoping that the men would be able to stop her from leaving. I should have known better, though. Woman like her always knew when to run.

Going to the table that held most of the women in my family, I looked at my mum and she must have seen something on my face because she stood and came to me as I shushed the little boy in my arms. Gently, I removed his arms from around my neck as I sat down with him in my lap. He still had tears streaming down his face, leaving clean tracks on his dirty cheeks.

Taking a serviette, I wet it in a glass of water and wiped at his face, cleaning him up.

“Mum, I want you to get hold of the lawyer and have him meet us in the back room of the gym with adoption paperwork. I don’t have this baby’s name, but I will in the next hour. You have mine and Hawk’s details,” I informed my mother, who nodded in agreement but still asked the question, “Are you sure this is the way you want to go?”

Pressing a kiss to the head of the little boy on my lap, I nodded, “Yeah, I’m sure.”

Mum smiled, “Okay then, guess I’m a grandmother again.”

“Congratulations, sweetheart,” Maggie said, coming up with a piece of buttered toast and jam which she held out to the toddler on my lap. He didn’t take it from her, just looked at it, then at me. At my nod, he reached out for it and devoured it, making me angry all over again. Not only was he filthy, but I also wondered when she’d last fed him. By the looks of the faces in the room, I knew they’d agree with my next questions.

“You ladies ready for some fun?”

“Hell, yeah,” Molly said, getting up from her chair and waddling her way towards the door.

“Absolutely fucking ready,” Julia muttered and followed Molly but not before running a gentle hand over the head of the baby that I held.

“I’m always with you,” Noni agreed, standing and helped Abby up next to her, who looked over at Ellie, indecision on her face. “I’ve got her, Mum. You go do what you have to do,” Ben assured her. Abby nodded and followed Noni outside, Beverly joining them not long after.

“Let me take him and Rea can look him over, then she can go over to the gym and makes sure you haven’t done any permanent damage to the cum receptacle that carried this beautiful baby,”Maggie said holding out another piece of toast to him before holding her arms out to take him. Again, he stopped to look at me, but at my nod, he went to her. It seemed he instinctively knew he could trust me.

“Go,” Rea shooed me, “I’ll make sure he’s okay then I’ll be over to minimise any damage you do to the bitch.”

Standing up from the chair I’d been sat in I took a step towards the door before turning to look at Aunt Maggie holding the precious baby boy, Rea, and the rest of the Crow kids, and I knew then my life would be changed forever by the trust that baby showed me. I vowed then nobody would ever hurt him again.

Unfortunately, we were too late to stop Rachel from leaving, which left me with a burning anger deep in my soul.

She did at least do the decent thing and throw a bag out with his paperwork which we’d need, because there was no way he was going back with her. I don’t care if she did come back in three weeks to get him. My girls and I’d take care of her then. I didn’t think she would, though. She wasn’t stupid, and she’d seen how Kaleb had clung to me. She also knew Hawk and what type of person he was.

I knew Hawk would struggle with taking on Kaleb, but I knew he’d do the right thing in the end. I never doubted it.

CHAPTER 13

HAWK

I was struggling.

Kaleb had been with us for just over a month.

It was getting harder and harder for me to pretend everything was good. It wasn’t that Kaleb was a bad kid. He wasn’t. If anything, he was too quiet. He rarely smiled. If he did, it was usually at Avy. Not once since he’d been with us had I heard him laugh. He was so serious, and I felt in my gut that as young as he was, he knew how I felt about him. As soon as I walked into a room that he was in, it’s as if he tried to get smaller, so I didn’t notice him. Not that any of this was his fault. It wasn’t. I took full responsibility for it all.

Avy had moved him into the room next to ours and the longer he was with us, the more the room was looking like something a little boy would love.

I knew I had to get over this because it wasn’t fair on him or on Avy who already loved him. I could tell just by how she lit up as soon as she saw him. I guess some part of me wished he was ours.
