Damien lingers, something obviously on his mind. “And how are things going with Ernest’s daughter’s estate?” he asks.

I blink. “Why?”

He shrugs. “I’m just wondering. It does seem like extra work for you when you’re already slammed.”

“It’s fine. It’s not a problem. She’s not a problem. Um, it’s been an interesting experience.”

He just stares at me.

“What?”

“I’m just thinking that people come into your life when you least expect it.”

“You mean how you were fuck buddies with your intern and now you’re married?”

He laughs. “Guilty. But, Kingsley, I could not imagine my life any other way. I’m just saying you deserve it too.”

“Maybe I don’t, though. I like my life the way it is.”

“Famous last words. Or deadly. You’re going to regret saying those words, believe me. If anyone thought that about themselves, it was me. Remember? What would you have said to me before I met My-Linh?”

I blink. “Go away. That’s what I’m saying to you now.”

He laughs. “Okay, well, I’m just a phone call away if you ever need anything.”

I hang up the call with my brother just as my phone buzzes with a text message.

It’s from Theodore.

“There’s someone here to pick up Miss Luna’s things. What do you want me to do?”

I flick over to my front door camera, then check the footage to see who it is.

I grab my keys and run out of my office.

I know exactly where she is.

Luna

“Where the fuck is she?”

I hear the words even before the door flies open and Kingsley bursts into the room.

Wild. Unkempt. A whirlwind of rage and desperation.

Unlike I’ve ever seen him before.

Somewhere in that anger, the calm, collected man I’ve come to know these last few weeks has burned to ashes, and all that’s left behind is this firestorm.

“Kingsley!” Alex shouts, standing up from his spot on the couch next to me.

“Where the fuck have you been?” Kingsley says, spinning around to face me, ignoring Alex.

My mouth opens, still in shock at him storming in here. I hadn’t expected to see him… well, ever. Not after what happened the last time.

After what he did.
