And how he chose to end it.

I left almost as soon as he had, walking around all night and somehow ending up at the Hamilton offices sometime in the early morning. Alex found me standing in the lobby, not knowing where to go and what to do.

We hadn’t talked since the day I’d run from his office, although I’d answered a few of his texts making sure that I was okay. I didn’t tell him what happened between Kingsley and me, partly because I couldn’t make any sense of it myself, let alone try to explain it to him.

But he convinced me to stay at his apartment tonight and sent his assistant to pick up my things from Kingsley’s house.

I can’t go back there.

Not ever again.

Seeing him now hurts, and I’m not really sure just how much more of it I can take.

“Kingsley, you need to leave,” I say. Or at least I think it’s me. Maybe it was Alex.

“I’m not going. Not until you tell me where you’ve been.”

“She’s been with me,” Alex says. Definitely him this time. I can tell by the smug way he says it. “And she’s coming home with me tonight. I don’t know what happened, but she’s not staying with you.”

“Luna, is this true?’ Kingsley demands. The low, monotonous way he used to speak a distant memory. “Luna?” he says again, taking a step closer to me.

Alex moves over to him, grabbing Kingsley’s arm and trying to pull him away. “You need to leave. She doesn’t want you here.”

“What the fuck do you know about what she wants?” Kingsley addresses Alex for the first time but doesn’t take his eyes off me.

The intensity reminds me of the last time he stared at me like that, his eyes a swirling pool of blue and emotion.

I fell so deep into them that I didn’t know my name from reason and let him touch me in ways I’d only been secretly dreaming he would for weeks.

“I’ve known her for much longer than you.”

“Then why did Ernest make me her trustee, Alex? Huh? Maybe he didn’t trust you.”

Alex hisses and reaches for the front of Kingsley’s rumpled shirt. But he just pushes Alex’s hand away, sidestepping him to get closer to me.

My body tries to put as much distance between us as possible; I stand up and step away from him, closer to Alex.

Kingsley’s eyes flood with hurt.

Raw, dark gray tinges the edges of his irises.

“Luna. We need to talk. Please.”

I shake my head, avoiding his eyes. “I don’t have anything to say to you right now, Kingsley.”

“I… please. I know I should’ve…” he stumbles over his words. “Alex, could you just fuck off and give us a moment alone, please?”

“No.”

Kingsley lets out an exasperated exhale. “God, take a hint, man.”

Alex ignores Kingsley and reaches across to take my hand in his, dragging a hiss from Kingsley.

“I’m not going anywhere, Luna. You’re safe here.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kingsley booms. “What are you implying?”

Alex tugs on my arm and steps in front of me. “I’m not implying fuck all. I told you, I don’t know what happened, but she was standing outside the building at seven this morning, cold and tired. So whatever happened, I know she’s better here, where I can take care of her, than with you, where she obviously didn’t want to be.”
