"I can take you to her now. She's just waking up."
We follow her down two hallways and into a room.
"Can you hear me, Charlotte?" Dr. Braun asks.
I walk in just to time to see her drowsily nod.
"Everything went great," he tells her.
She gives a goofy smile, and it takes any remaining worries away as me and Lexa laugh.
"I'll be back a little later to discuss recovery with you, okay?"
"Hungry," she groans.
Dr. Braun chuckles. "Well, it's always a good sign when someone wants to eat when they wake up. Just broth for you, though, I'm afraid. I'm sure you ladies will take good care of her."
"Of course," we say as he passes us to leave.
We walk to her bedside, and she smiles at us, groggily singing, "I got a kidney."
"Hell yeah, you did," Lexa states.
"How do you feel?"
"Hungry and tired."
"Go back to sleep. We'll be here."
She nods, and her eyes drift closed. We're in there another hour before a nurse wheels a cart in.
"You're not supposed to have food in here," she says with way too much attitude.
"Okay," I reply slowly. "Which is why I'm confused why you're bringing us food, then."
"Someone had this delivered for you guys and called to let us know we were not to turn it away. Enjoy, I guess."
"Don't worry. We will." Lexa gives her a fake smile before turning to me as the nurse leaves. "What the hell is this?"
I take some of the lids off while she takes off others.
"Law," I breathe.
"How do you know?"
I look over the cart again. "These are all the things I've ordered at the hotels. Well, except for the broth over there."
"Which I assume he got for Charlotte." She looks up from the food with excitement in her eyes.
"Don't even think about saying it."
"Too late. I'm already thinking it, so I might as well say it. Give that man another chance, Soph. I mean, freaking look at this."
"He came too, to the waiting room while Char was in surgery. Just held my hand in silence."
Her eyes widen. "Soph, are you fucking kidding me? I would have taken him to the nearest bathroom the moment I knew Char was okay."
I chuckle. "You really have a way with words."
