“You’ve got company,” I said hurriedly. “Monani’s guy is a few cars behind you. I’ll stay with you until you finish work.”

“I don’t think that’s a very good idea, Marcus,” she said worriedly.

But the lights changed before I could reply, and we drove off.

The bouncers groaned when they saw me at the door, but I shook my head.

“I’m not here to make any trouble, guys. I’m just watching out for her today because she has a tail.”

“You make one wrong move and you’ll be banned from the club,” said the biggest one who looked as if he could crush my head like a walnut between his palms, but who was a real sweetheart according to Celine.

“I swear on your life I’ll behave,” I said sweetly.

He growled at me, but let me past the velvet ropes.

I took a table closer to the stage today because I had a feeling Monani’s guys might try and make trouble at the club. I didn’t care if they destroyed the place. My only concern was Celine. I wanted to get her out of here before she got hurt.

I wished she’d agree to wear a bulletproof body suit on stage. That could be sexy, right? So what if the idiots drooling over her disagreed with that theory? She would live to dance another day, and that’s all that mattered.

This time, I plugged in noise-canceling headphones to tune out any comments that might enrage me because I couldn’t protect Celine if I was banned from the club. At the end of her act, a man approached her, and I had to hold on to the sides of my chair to not drag him away.

I don’t know what he said to her, but she turned to stare at me for a long moment before she shook her head at him. She said something politely that he clearly didn’t like. But as soon as he opened his mouth to argue with her, one of the bouncers forced him to back up and Celine vanished behind the curtains.

The man looked furious. He marched up to where I sat and slammed a hand on the table.

I took off my headphones and raised an eyebrow, knowing the move would piss him off even more.

“Can I help you?” I asked politely.

I was aware of the bouncers approaching my table.

“Who the fuck are you?” he asked.

“Who wants to know?” I asked mildly, trying to hold onto my temper.

“The man who wants to bang your girl,” he said crudely.

It was all I could do to restrain the need to pound his fucking face into the table. Before I could say anything, the bouncers dragged him away and slammed him face-first into a wall.

“Oops,” said the biggest one blandly. “Apologies, sir. My hand slipped. If you would come this way?”

“Where are you taking me? I’ve paid good money to be here,” raged the asshole.

“You’ve also harassed a dancer and threatened a customer. You’re not allowed here again,” replied the bouncer sternly, as he booted him out and slammed the door on him.

I blew out a breath and tried to relax. My fists were still clenched. I unclenched them slowly and told myself that this was the price I had to pay if I wanted to be with Celine. I was not the kind of guy who thrived on the adrenaline rush of beating up every man who approached my woman. If Celine insisted on working at the club, I had to accept that she was well protected and make my peace with the fact that men would always try to hit on her.

It wasn’t as if I had a choice in the matter. There was no question of walking away from her. She had my heart firmly wrapped around her pinkie finger. I had always believed myself to be an evolved sort of man, but I had a lot more to learn if I wanted to be with Celine.

The big bouncer came up to me an hour later. Damn it! I couldn’t keep calling him that. I had to learn his name if I was going to be around her regularly.

“Celine is ready to leave.”

I gathered my stuff and shoved it into my bag.

“Thanks, man. My name is Marcus,” I said, extending a hand towards him.

“My name’s Little. Ben Little,” he replied blandly, shaking my hand gently.
