“Use your nose, does it smell like I have your men?” Chase questions.

Chase’s words are followed by a few moments of silence. The other members of the pack, with the man, are sniffing about no doubt. I can scarcely breathe.

I know we don’t have the members of their pack, but I don’t know how volatile this man is or can be if pushed to the brink.

“How do I know you haven’t taken them and put them somewhere else?” the man scowls.

“I haven’t.” Chase reiterates with irritation in his voice this time.

“But how do I know?” the man still won’t let it go.

“Why don’t you go be useful and stop wasting time here. Find your men and you’ll find out we have nothing to do with this.” Chase barks and then with one final command as he begins to slam the door behind him, “Now get the hell off of my property and don’t come back unless I invite you.”

I peek out the window and watch as a few large men stumble off looking rather unhappy with the outcome of their bombardment.

Rushing down into the living room I meet the rest of the pack already in there. Chase is just reentering the room after slamming the front door.

There isn’t any furniture yet, so we all gather around on the floor. Chase takes charge, his gaze sweeping across each of us.

“We need to figure out what’s going on and fast,” he declares. “This goes beyond a territorial dispute. If we don’t think and act with tact, we might run into more trouble than we can handle.”

“I agree,” Ash nods and looks around the room.

I agree too but I have no idea what I can do under these circumstances, so I think it’s best not to chime in just yet.

“The Grey pack is missing members of their pack, and they seem to think we are responsible for their disappearances.” Chase states the problem.

Dustin raises an inquisitive eyebrow. “And why would they think that?”

Chase exhales sharply, “I don’t know but I intend to find out. We’ve heard stories of missing shifters from different partsof the country during our travels. This doesn’t feel like a coincidence at all. We are in the midst of something bigger and we can’t afford to be on the wrong side of whatever is going on.”

Isaiah grunts in agreement, unfolding his arms. “So, what’s the plan, Alpha?”

Chase shoots him a grateful look before turning to address us collectively. “We investigate and play to our strengths. We find out who’s behind the disappearances, why they’re pinning it on us, and how to clear our names. We can’t let this spiral into a full-blown war between packs.”

Drew nods contemplatively. “And where do we even start?”

Sitting beside Chase, I speak up. “What about the men in lab coats? They were after Drew. There’s got to be a connection, right?”

“Madison’s onto something. The lab coats might hold the key. Drew, where did you meet those guys?”

“I didn’t meet them per se, they met me, but it seems like they’ve got some type of network because if there were just a bunch of people constantly wearing lab coats, they’d draw a lot of attention.”

“Do you think that we are being blamed as retribution for what happened in that alley?” Ash asks.

“It very well could be,” Chase nods.

Dustin leans back with a mischievous grin on his face. “Sounds like we’re diving headfirst into the unknown. Count me in for some mystery-solving action.”

“Dustin, you’re sly enough, do you think you can go out on the town and see what information you can gather?”

“You don’t have to ask me twice.” He says smiling.

“Madison, you mentioned you have experience with underground forums on the computer, would you be able to dig around and see what you can come up with?” I smile and say “Absolutely.”

“Isaiah, I need you to keep an eye on the property and make sure we don’t get any more surprises.” Chase instructs.

“Got it.” Isaiah confirms.
