“Find out anything?” I ask.

“Not much but it does seem that these disappearances are linked to the lab coats.” Chase sighs with disappointment, “Did you find out anything?”

“I sure did,” My heart races as I carefully choose my next words. “It seems we are up against more than just territorial disputes and missing shifters. There seems to be a black ops group of humans hunting shifters.”

All eyes are on me now.

“They are well-organized, financially backed, and maybe a little bit crazy,” I announce with a steady voice despite the gravity of the revelation.

Chase’s eyes narrow and the room falls silent.

After an excruciating stretch where time seems to stand still, Chase finally speaks again, “What do you know about this group?”

“They are targeting shifters with two main purposes in mind. The first is to find weaknesses and the second is to see if there is any way they can acquire your strengths.”

I can sense a collective resolve among us as the realization that we’ve stumbled into a war, dawns on the rest of the pack.

“The problem is I have no idea who they are, where they are based, or who is funding them,” I add and bow my head in defeat.

“Good work Madison,” Ash says affirmingly.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us, but we know more now than we did before and that’s a huge start,” Chase says nodding at me with appreciation in his eyes. “Why don’t we all get some rest and come back to this with fresh eyes in the morning.”

A series of grumbles meet Chase’s request, but no one outright argues. It’ll be hard to get to sleep after that news, but I can see by the circles under everyone’s eyes Chase is right, we need the rest. So, everyone sluggishly gets up and heads to their own rooms.

Chase gently grabs my hand and leads me to his room.

Chapter 13

Chase

The night sprawls on and even though I gave the order for us to all get some sleep, I am not sure that I will be getting any tonight. Still, it feels nice to lay down, especially next to Madison. She didn’t hesitate to let me lead her to my bed as we all dispersed.

By the pattern of Madison’s breathing, I know she is not sleeping either.

“I’m sorry you had to be the bearer of bad news, but I am so grateful that you found out what you did,” I whisper, rubbing her bare arm gently.

“I just wish I could have found out more. I feel like I am left with more questions than answers. But, maybe now that I have the information I gathered tonight I’ll be able to find out some more.” She says softly.

“Are you up for that?” I ask.

“It’s one of the only ways I can make myself useful. I must help.” She says turning to face me. The circles under her eyes are dark and her eyebrows are knit together. “It’s just so frustrating. I have this feeling that we are missing something important but there’s no way to know what it is. At least not just yet.”

“I have the same feeling. There’s got to be another reason that the Grey pack thought we were behind the disappearances of their pack members, it doesn’t make sense for them to come in so hot if they didn’t have more than just a hint of suspicion about the weird newcomers.” I try to understand.

“I’ve seen weirder and less reasonable things happen,” Madison says solemnly.

“That’s true but packs are usually more organized than that. We have laws and order that we abide by and take seriously. It’s how we survive in this hostile world without killing each other off.” I try to reassure her.

“That makes sense,” Madison’s voice is distant and when I look back at her I see her eyelids drooping shut. ‘Get some rest beautiful’, I think as I stare back up at the ceiling careful not to do anything to disrupt her slumber.

It’s going to be a long night.

I wake up to the smell of bacon and the sound of it sizzling in the pan. Reaching out for Madison I feel she is not there. Sitting bolt upright I let my eyes adjust to the brightness of my room.

Judging by the position of the sun it is well past 10:00 am. Shit. I wanted to get an earlier start on the day.

Lumbering down the stairs, Isaiah’s laughter flows down the hallway from the kitchen.
