He assisted her to the sidewalk, his arm still around her. “What matters is no one was hurt.”

“But they were starting on the baby’s nursery. She’ll be so devastated at the loss.”

“I’m sure they both are.”

They stood on the sidewalk staring at the ruin of the new construction. The contractors had just installed the siding.

Wren shook her head. “Your jobs are dangerous. The Disciples still managed to find me in hiding. What if this”—she waved at the burned home—“happens to us?”

Grasping her shoulder, he swung her to face him. Their gazes connected.

“But that pastor—”

“The pastor wasn’t coming to the home to track you down, Wren. He was there trying to act like a pastor and throw people off the scent that he’s a criminal. The entire Disciples club is wiped out and everyone associated with it is behind bars.”

“But there will be more dangerous groups.”

“It’s why…” He faltered, glancing down.

She caught his gaze again. “Jennings?”

“It’s why I’ve been thinking about taking you back to my hometown. Start fresh.”

She shook her head. “You can’t do that. Sentry needs you. Your team needs you.” She twisted to look up at the house again. The gray clouds scudding across the sky seemed to weigh down the mood even more. But when she turned those eyes on him, his heart lifted on a swirl of love.

“We both have dreams, Jennings. I won’t let you walk away from your team.”

“And I won’t let you live in fear. If that means we leave this place and I work in my dad’s garage, then I’m more than willing to.”

The noise of car tires on the street made him reluctantly look away from Wren. The SUV rolling toward them was familiar. So was the man at the wheel.

When Livingston parked, all the doors opened. Lexis got out of the front seat. Julius from the back.

The trio approached him and Wren slowly.

Jennings reached out to Livingston first, bringing him in to thump his back. “Damn, bro. I’m sorry about the house.”

“So am I. With Dove so close to delivering the baby, it was a blow. But at least she’s safe. We can put up a portable crib in the house we’re renting.”

They drew apart, and he reached for Lexis next.

“Glad to have you home. Good work, Abel.”

“Thanks.”

“The bar’s been shut down. The personnel at the church arrested. The guy Wren saw at the nursing facility—the pastor behind the operation with the Disciples—in custody.”

Jennings stepped back. “That’s good. Real good.”

Finally, Julius stepped forward. Their gazes met. His brother jerked a thumb at Jennings. “The lengths this guy will go to in order to prove me wrong.”

Jennings ducked his head to hide the grin stretching across his face. “Are you admitting you were wrong about me being able to pull off this op?”

“That and…” Julius looked at Wren.

He understood what his brother wasn’t saying.

“I’ll go all the way to the altar to prove you wrong onthat, Julius.”
