With that, she slammed the door. I turned and walked back to my bike. Could she have been right? Was it pure luck? She was right. I had been grieving the loss of my relationship for months. There were a few times I tried to get out there. Sometimes just a quick fuck. What I really wanted was a mate, and fate hadn’t intercepted yet. I had already been ready to accept Clover as my mate, but would Clover accept me??

I drove my bike back to Clover’s apartment. She was allowing me to stay for now. What if she rejects me, too?

Clover

Ifuriously cleaned the rest of my apartment. He had said he would come back after work. The couch couldn’t be fixed. Although I slapped duct tape on the claw marks. My hands landed on my hips as I stared at my work. Could I get him to replace my couch? We really needed to talk about things. What does it mean to be in a magical marriage? He said there was no divorce. Surely, that can’t be true. Is there a support group for humans in this conundrum? I tried to google and nothing came up.

A knock came from the door. I opened it. It was him. “I guess you need a key now.”

“I guess. If you are letting me stay.”

“Do I have a choice?”

Vin shrugged. “You could have refused to let me stay.”

He stepped into the apartment and looked around. He pointed to the couch. “Again, I’m sorry about that. I can’t really control my animal like that. Especially if I was wasted like that.”

“What does the future look like for us? I don’t know what is next,” I said as I fell onto the couch.

His hands raked through his hair as he sat down beside me. The heat radiated off his body and a sudden warmth and relaxation passed through me. “I talked to Siobhan. She said it wasn’t a drug. Other than pushing more booze on us than we should have had, she just added pure luck to our drinks. She waxed on a bit about how fate and luck are hand in hand. That chosen mates can matter just as much as fated.”

“I have no clue what any of this means, though.”

“Even fated mates don’t always work out. I guess we’ll get to know each other and learn as we go,” he said.

“I’m talking about the whole paranormal thing. I don’t understand half of what you say,” I said. A sigh passed through my lips. We were already magically married. We had been intimate with each other, yet it would be like the first time with him. Did drunk me at least want it? Doubt coursed through my system. How could I trust him? It wasn’t his fault. A leprechaun got us drunk and doused us with luck. I don’t understand how that factored in so much for me. I was a lightweight no matter what.

His chuckle brought me out of my thoughts. “Maybe I should introduce you to some humans I know. Their mates are shifters, too.”

“More wolves?”

“No, dragons.”

My eyes widened as my mouth fell open. “Dragons exist?”

“A lot of things exist that you’ve heard about. And others that haven’t crossed into everyday mythos.”

I groaned as I leaned back. “I need an orientation class for this,” I moaned. “Why did they kick you out again?

He chuckled. “I can help you with that. It’s not because I bit you per se. It’s ‘cause I’ve been messing around with another alpha.”

“What do you mean?”

“Wolves are pack animals. Things are about to change in the pack near here. There is an alpha vying for power over that pack. He’s refusing to relent to them. I’ve been a part of the people that may be the future new pack. I risked my status in the pack and everything.”

“Why?”

“I believe in the pack's future. If my former alpha won’t listen, then I need to go where the power is. I won’t be the last. I’m the beginning.”

“That’s rough. Could you have somehow changed things? I am assuming all your family and friends are there.”

“I could have pleaded, but I think you’re a lot prettier than the alpha, anyway.” He winked at me. My heart fluttered in my chest.

A swell of panic swirled inside me. “I think the worst part is that I don’t remember any of the sex.” Dang, I really blurted that out there.

He smiled. His hand reached out to my face and his rough fingers trailing down the edge of my face. “Me neither. I guess we get to make memories together.”
