It was so hot. I kicked off the covers and groaned. My socks felt yucky on my legs. I struggled to pull them down. Why were they so hard to get off?
“Easy, Bitty. What’s wrong?”

He helped me pull them off. I rolled over to my side. “Everything hurts.”

I rolled my eyes and tried to get out of bed.

I ignored him and tried to stand. I didn’t realize how badly my legs hurt until Iput weight on them. Pike grabbed my sleepshirt and hauled me backwards.

I struggled to open my eyes.
“That’s a good girl. I’m going to sit you up a little bit, okay?” Pike said as he slid his hand under my back and lifted me.
I whimpered. Every muscle in my body hurt.
“I’m so sorry, baby. I put it in a syringe to make it easier for you. All you have to do is suck.”
Had I felt better, I would have made a joke about his wording.
I swallowed more of the green sludge before Pike lowered me back to the mattress. I was cold again. I snuggled under the big comforter and he ran his fingers through my hair.
“The pharmacy opens in a few hours, and I’ll go get your meds. Do you want anything special from the store? Is there anything that sounds like it would be yummy to your tummy?”
Nothing sounded like it would ever taste good again, so I shook my head.
He bent and kissed my forehead. “Okay, baby.”
He’d still buy some things he thought I might eat. I knew him. That was just what he did. He’s going to make some Little girl very happy one day, I just wish it were me.
