I laughed. “And maggots in an infected foot aren't?” I put my phone down on the bar.

He smiled and shook his head. “Isn’t this great first date material?” His laugh was one that made me weak in the knees, one I wanted to bottle up and keep forever.

Chapter Two

-Milo-

This girl…

I’ll be the first to admit that when Clay suggested—numerous times—that I needed to meet Ophelia’s friend, I wasn’t thrilled by the idea. I wasn’t in a place to date, nor did I like blind dates. Or bars. After leaving school, I had become somewhat of a hermit when I wasn’t on shift. I either stayed in my bed, played video games, read, or just…sat there. So…when Clay suggestedagainthat I meet Ophelia’s friend, I agreed for a night out.

I figured it couldn’t be as bad as I was making it out to be. I had to leave my room at some point to see something other than accident after accident. There was more to life, right? I dusted myself off, showered, and picked out the best outfit I had, and then made my way to the bar. I expected to meet this friend of Ophelia’s, have a few drinks, and then return to my cave.

I didn’t expect her to be stunning.

I also didn’t expect her to be pre-dental and extremely easy to talk to.

And I really didn’t expect to be enjoying my time.

This girl, I liked. I was instantly hitting myself for not agreeing to come out earlier.

“Maddy,” Ophelia called from the other end of the bar, “come with me to the bathroom. Let’s go.” Ophelia grabbed Madeline’s arm and pulled her from the bar stool.

Madeline shook her head, rolled her eyes, and gave me a look. “She’s one of those girls who can’t go to the restroom alone. I’ll be right back.” She touched my thigh and stood to follow her friend.

“Do you want me to grab you another rum and Coke?” I asked, not wanting her to leave.

She spun, her skirt floating around her. “Sure, but make it a Dr. Pepper.” She smiled, spinning around again before skipping after Ophelia, the grin shining back to me.Damn, she’s cute.

I smirked back and turned to the bartender, waving my hand to signal him.

“Sooo?” Clay appeared by my side. “What do you think? I knew you would like her.”

“I’ll admit, Clay, you were right. She’s something else.” I kept my eyes on Madeline as she and Ophelia turned the corner to the restrooms. “She’s different than I thought she would be.”

“See!” He hit my shoulder. “I told you. I’ve known Maddy as long as I’ve known Ophelia.”

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but when you said she was Ophelia’s friend I was expecting—”

“Someone different?” Clay jumped in, finishing my thought for me.

I pursed my lips and raised my eyebrows. Clay and Ophelia had been dating since we’ve lived together, it’s not that I didn’t like Ophelia, she just wasn’t my type – and her friends that I had met weren’t either. “Well – no offense to Ophelia’s friends...but…yes? Did you know Madeline’s pre-dental.” The bartender arrived and quickly took my drink order, then vanished once again.

“Oh, yeah. That’s a bit strange.” Clay took the seat next to me and reached for his new glass.

“Why is that strange?” I looked over at him as the bartender arrived with mine and Madeline’s drinks.

“Who wants to be a dentist?” he asked, furrowing his brow and taking a swig of his beer.

I ignored his comment and shifted my eyes back to the corner. How long did it take to use the restroom? I wanted Madeline to come back to the bar. I wanted to keep talking about the crazy things we’d seen, to feel her hands on my thighs and arms, and I definitely wanted to get to know her better.

“Who wants to be an accountant?” I looked at Clay, lifting my glass to my lips. I ordered the same Dr. Pepper and rum as Madeline, and I could smell the rum before it even hit my lips.

“People who enjoy math.” Clay glared at me. “Anyway…” He set his glass back on the wood, the classic clang on the bar top hitting my ears. “How long does it take for girls to go to the bathroom?” he asked, spinning in his seat.

“I’ve been thinking the same thing,” I grumbled.

We both sat in silence until the girls returned, which seemed to take forever. Ophelia pulled Clay off to the dance floor, obviously feeling the alcohol a little more than Madeline was. She reached for her glass and took a sip, taking her seat next to me again.
