“Now, that simply won’t do. I need to show you off, so that’s what I’m going to do.”

He’s almost to the door when I call out his name.

“Kieran, you really should take Jane.”

“And you should remember your place, pet.”

With that, he leaves me alone, making me feel like the biggest fool in the world.

Kieran doesn’t come for me that night. The next day, my meals are sent to my room, a clear sign that he doesn’t want to see me. But at six, there’s a knock on my door.

“Come in.”

Seb enters, carrying a dress bag. “I can’t wait to see what this beauty looks like.”

He hangs it on the outside of my closet door, unzipping the bag. I move closer to get a better look. The dress is mint blue, reminding me of the dress color my mom wore to her high school prom. She used to have a photo of herself on her nightstand from that night, and I always thought she looked so beautiful. This dress is more modern than the one she wore. This one is an off-shoulder mermaid style with sequins all over that catch the light. The detached sleeves also remind me of the dress my mom wore, and that’s because they’re as puffy as the sleeves on her dress.

Seb asks, “What do you think?”

“It’s beautiful.”

“Kieran has good taste, doesn’t he?”

“He picked this out?”

“He did. The shoes are in the bag. Do you need any help with your hair or make-up?”

“You do hair?”

He grins. “I’m a man of many talents, my friend.”

“Sure. I’d like that.” I pause. “I’m not really sure what to expect.”

“Well, Kieran wants people to see you with him. Get some interest going, you know? I’m sure he’ll say hello to Odin and Selma, who are the ones getting engaged.”

“Do you know if any of the Families from Chicago will be there?”

“I’ve heard the Di Bellos are in town, but that’s it.”

I frown. I should be glad that I won’t have to worry about running into Winter.

“Not a fan of Luca Di Bello?” Seb snorts. “That’s a very common reaction to The Beast.”

“I don’t know much about him. Sorry, I’ve just been in a bad mood today.”

“Well, chin up. I’ll leave you to shower and dress. Call me when you’re ready to have your hair done. You have an hour before Kieran wants to leave, so don’t dillydally.”

“I won’t.”

An hour later, on the dot, I step into the foyer where Kieran is waiting for me. I’m dumbstruck when I see him. That’s the only word to describe how seeing Kieran dressed up makes me feel. The black slacks and dress shirt cling to his muscles, and I squeeze my thighs together in response. His hair hangs freely, making me think of all the naughty things we’ve done together where that hair has brushed against my body. I shiver. God, how am I going to handle being at his side all night?

“That bad?”

I shake my head, laughing. “Quite the opposite. You look so handsome.”
