“She doesn’t,” I agree. “But this will be an important life lesson for her to never trust something if it’s too good to be true.”

“You’re going to destroy her.”

My chest is tight as I nod. “I know.”

He stands. “I never thought this day would come.”

“What day?”

“The day that you disappointed me.” He shakes his head. “I’ll be in my office if you need me.”

He leaves, and I let him. He does not know what in the fuck he’s talking about. Ari isn’t innocent. Not really. And she might not have been the one who hurt me, but she’s related to him. So, yeah, I’m going to break her little heart. When this is over, I’ll walk away knowing I got my revenge without giving the Triton family a second thought.

Working is difficult after my conversation with Seb. At six, I’m about to call it a day when a knock on the door makes me look up.

Jane gives me a timid smile. “Are you busy?”

I stand, smiling back. “I’m never too busy for you.”

She enters my office, closing the door behind her. My gut says she’s here because I haven’t returned her call, which means she’s going to have a lot to say. Biting back a sigh, I round the desk and kiss her on the cheek before she sinks into one of the visitor seats.

“How was the engagement party? I heard Selma’s dress was lovely.”

I take my seat and nod. “I suppose it was. The party was pleasant. I had a lot of interest in my project.”

Her jaw is set. “Good. I want her gone.”

“I know, my love. I’m working on it.”

She brushes an imaginary piece of lint from her pants and says, “I heard what Elsa said last night. From several people, in fact.”

“Elsa says a lot of things.”

“You know what I mean, Kieran. Don’t play coy. When are we going to get married?”

I snort before I can stop myself. “Shall I pull out my calendar right now and pick a date?”

“Yes.”

I’m taken aback by her blunt answer. I expect to see a hint of laughter in her eyes but find none.

“I’m tired of being the laughingstock of all of my friends. We’ve been engaged for years now and yet you’ve made no moves to marry me. All I hear is excuse after excuse with no action and I’m getting tired of it. So, yes, open your calendar and pick a date.”

My lips part in surprise. Jane’s never spoken to me like this. Reaching for my phone, I open my calendar. Ari’s contract isn’t up until the first of October.

“How do you feel about a fall wedding?”

“Fall is perfect.”

My chest is tight as she rattles on about wanting to get married before the holidays. This is what I want, right? So why does it feel like I’m fucking drowning?

“Kieran, are you even listening to me?”

“Of course I am, my love. Now, what were you saying about a big wedding?”

She smiles and launches back into her speech about the venue she wants.
