Where did he even get that?

“We’re not going,” he announced, pushing his way into the house. “No one can see you like that. I’m very possessive.”

I laughed as he grabbed my waist, taking another look. The way his eyes roamed down my body sent a shiver down my spine.

“Damn,” he breathed out. “I am a lucky man.”

“Oh, I know,”

“So, you agree?” His hand crept up my back, finding bare skin. “That we should skip it and just stay home?”

“That is not what I said, and you know it.” I shook my head, feeling ridiculously happy. “Besides, do you know how long it took me to get ready?”

“I don’t, but do you want to find out how quickly I can get you…un-ready?” That scarred brow rose as his fingers played with the strap of my dress.

“Yes,” I answered, my voice low and sultry. I slid a hand under his suit jacket, and his breath hitched. “But later.”

“Marin.” My name came out of his mouth like a groan with a bit of a huff at the end.

“Oh, come on,” I stepped out of his embrace, offering a hand. “How bad could it be?”

If only I had known…

“Stop staring at my ass,” I scolded him as we walked up to the inn.

“Never gonna happen.”

The grin he gave me as I looked behind me was infectious. He seemed to have gotten over his temper tantrum and was now either okay with me being seen in this dress or he was just planning on being glued to me the entire night.

My guess was the second one.

But I was okay with that.

I knew, like, five people on this island. I needed the moral support.

Molly had truly outdone herself with the decorations for the event. The path was lit with lanterns, and all the trees had been covered in beautiful, twinkling white lights.

“Is it inside?” I asked, realizing I’d never asked Molly for a single detail.

“No,” he answered, as we walked onto the patio. The lanterns curve away from the door and around the house. “I believe it’s out back, under tents.”

Well, that would explain where we were headed.

If the entrance was impressive, the main event was enough to take your breath away.

White tents covered the expansive green lawn. The bay sparkled in the background, lit with torches and cozy seating along the shore.

Waiters wove through the crowd with trays of hors d’oeuvres, and a small quartet of musicians set the mood.

“And I was worried people would be in board shorts.” I snorted.

“No.” Macon laughed. “Not when Molly is running it.”

A couple I didn’t recognize walked up to us, and I felt Macon’s hand slip around my waist.

Possessive bastard.
