I let out a ragged breath. “Yes,” I admitted. “I ran into Raymond right before he boarded that day. I asked him if he’d been drinking. He swore he’d been sober for a while.”

My dad snorted. “That man was never sober a day in his life.”

“His wife told a different story,” I remarked, remembering the hours of work we had done after the accident. “But I’ll never know for sure. I let him go, and, well”—I looked down at the grass—“we all know what happened after.”

A moment passed and then another as Dean processed what I’d just said.

Before he could say anything, someone came stalking through the yard.

Someone had already taken it upon themselves to call the sheriff’s office, and Lucas walked up to my father.

“Come on, Martin. Party’s over,” he said, taking my dad’s arm and hauling him toward the exit.

He went willingly and flashed me a grin.

“Take care, son.”

“Yeah, fuck you.”

He chuckled, walking away, knowing he’d gotten his revenge.

I’d walked into this gala feeling like I finally had it all.

Her eyes widened slightly, but she simply nodded. She turned to Jake and whispered in his ear. A second later, he pulled out keys from his pocket.

“Go,” she insisted, handing them to me. “Go get some air.”
