He reached for my hand, and I took his.

“He tried to make it up to me by renting a car so he could drive here. He caught the last ferry. But he never made it. If I hadn’t yelled, if he had just caught that flight.”

“It wasn’t your fault.”

I looked up at him. “It wasn’t your fault either.”

His eyes squeezed closed. “It’s not the same.”

“It is exactly the same,” I stressed. “Did you send Raymond on that boat with the intent of causing harm?”

“No,” he answered, his voice barely a whisper.

“You made a decision, just like Daniel did. You can’t predict the future. No one can.”

“I feel—” He paused. “I feel undeserving of you because of it. I tried to push you away at first. I tried to deny these feelings, but I couldn’t. I can’t—” He let out a breath. “I love you so damn much, Marin.”

This man…

“I can’t explain why things happen,” I told him. “I’m not even sure I’d want to if I could. But I do know a good thing when I see it, Macon. You’re my good thing. My one good thing after a long, endless sea of bad. And I don’t want to waste any more of my life, swimming in grief and guilt. Do you?”

He looked down at me, those eyes blazing into mine. “No,” he finally answered. “I don’t.”

“Good.” I smiled. “Then let’s go home. I’m dying to get out of the dress. Wanna join me?”

His expression changed, a large grin spreading across his face. “Always.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Icouldn’t stop staring at her.

I’d been awake for over an hour, just watching her sleep.

The sheet was draped over her naked body as the breath slowly moved through her parted lips.

I’d thought I’d lost her.

The moment I turned around and realized she was gone…

The panic in my chest as I searched the lawn.

Gone.

She was gone.

I didn’t know how long I’d stood there in utter disbelief as everyone around me began to chatter away.

The gala went back to normal, as if nothing had happened.

Meanwhile, my life fell apart.

Gone…

I didn’t know how or when, but I started walking. Moving.

And suddenly, I was in front of the bar.

My eye twitched. My fingers itched for something to hold.
