And then I saw him.

Fucking Sheriff Hayes.

He looked over at me and gave a triumphant smile.

I won, it said.

Fuck that.

I came at him with everything but my fists. I knew my limits. I would not end up in jail because of this guy.

We yelled. I tossed quite a few accusations his way. People gasped. He laughed them off.

And then, with a look of malice in his eyes, he had stormed off with the promise of retribution in his wake.

Yeah, I was fucking screwed.

At least I wouldn’t be working for that asshole anymore.

And I still had her.

Plus, there were no more secrets between us.

I let out a sigh of relief as I dragged the back of my palm along her cheek. She made a little noise and shifted to her side, brown curls falling around her face.

That moment in front of the bar had been a wake-up call.

I needed to make some changes.

I needed to?—

The doorbell rang. I checked my watch and raised an eyebrow.

A little early for someone to visit.

I threw on a pair of flannel pants and ran toward the door, hoping whoever it was didn’t require Marin awake.

I had not expected to find Kristy on the other side of the door.

Her eyes traced over my bare chest, and a flash of longing zipped across her face.

“I figured you’d be here,” she said stoically.

“I wasn’t even aware you knew whereherewas.”

Her lips pursed together as she gripped the handle of her purse. “I got the address from Molly.”

“Molly?” My brow rose.

“I called her,” she explained. “I needed to see you. I wanted to tell you?—”

“What?” I asked, the frustration clear in my voice. What could be so damn important that she had come all the way?—

“The sheriff was arrested this morning.”

“What the fuck?” The words fell from my lips.

The serious look on her face told me she wasn’t kidding.
