Maybe I needed to sit down for this.

I took a step aside, and she stepped inside.

“Have a seat,” I told her. “I’m gonna—I’m gonna go grab a shirt.”

’Cause sitting shirtless in the living room with my ex while my girlfriend slept naked down the hallway was way too weird.

I jogged toward the bedroom and headed straight to the dresser. The tiniest grin tugged at the corner of my lips as I remembered the conversation we’d had just days earlier.

“Put your stuff in my dresser, Macon.”

“Are you sure?”

“I like seeing your things when you’re not here.”

The next day, when I had come over after work, I had found her at the door in nothing but my shirt.

Marin seemed to have a knack for sexy surprises.

“Why are you putting a shirt on? You know how I feel about shirts this early in the morning.”

I turned to see her sitting up in bed, the sheet dangerously close to falling to her waist.

“That they’re better on the floor?”

“Exactly.” She grinned.

I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Kristy just showed up. I thought you’d appreciate me being fully clothed when I spoke with her.”

Her mischievous grin turned confused. “Kristy? Here?” She used her pointer finger and pressed down on the mattress.

I nodded.

“Oh, well then, yes.” She waved a hand toward my chest. “Cover that shit up. Did she say why she was here?”

I threw a T-shirt over my head. “She said the sheriff was arrested.”

“Are you serious?” She threw the covers off. “I’ll be right out.”

I let out a sigh.So very naked.“This is not how I planned the morning.”

She shooed me away. “Later.”

I left before I changed my mind.

I walked back to the living room, noticing the way Kristy sat, so rigid and uncomfortable. She glanced around the room, checking out the artwork and several photos.

“Did Marin do that?” she asked, pointing to a painting near the door.

“Yeah,” I answered, folding my arms across my chest. I suddenly felt very protective of it. Of Marin.

“It’s really very good,” she commented, almost as if it pained her to admit it.

I relaxed a little and walked to the seat Marin always favored. No sooner had I sat down than Marin came bouncing down the hall. She’d hastily put on a pair of leggings and a long sweater.

“Good morning, Kristy,” she said.

“Morning,” she answered through tight lips.
