There was an audible silence.
“What?” It was almost a gasp, high pitched and shrill at the end. “We’ve been on the phone for how long, and you’re just telling me thisnow?”
I laughed, loving her all the more in that moment.
And then I proceeded to tell her everything that had happened since I’d arrived in Ocracoke.
And I did mean everything.
I told her about showing up to the gala ticketing event and pissing off Macon’s ex. Our deal. The kiss.
“So, it was just for show then?”
“Um…” I bit my lip. “It was supposed to be.”
“What does that mean?”
I let out a big, long breath. “I kissed him to make his ex jealous, and then…” I paused, remembering the exact moment. His sudden surprise. The jolt of electricity I’d felt between us. The sensational heat as I felt as his fingers dug through my hair and he pulled me close.

Every inch was just as hard as I’d imagined it would be.
“He kissed me back.”

“And?” she asked, completely engrossed now and not at all tired.
“It was so fucking hot.”
It was the first time I’d admitted it. To myself. To anyone else.

“Hmm, interesting.”
“Interesting?” I echoed her, sitting up. “That’s all you have to say?”
“Well, it’s just…I’m gonna make an observation, okay?”
I rolled my eyes. This was what happened when you had a lawyer for a best friend. “Okay.”
“You’ve been depriving me of sleep for a while now, talking about all the ways in which you and Curtis are all wrong for each other.”
“Uh-huh.”
“And then you went on to say how broken you are and how you’ll basically never love again.”
“Right…”
“Well, it seems like, in the short time you’ve been in Ocracoke, you’ve managed to find someone who proves all those theories incorrect, wouldn’t you say?”
My eyes widened.
Macon was easy to talk to, and to open up to.
