Glancing around, Morgan found Mack standing to one side. His eyeline was already on her, eyes narrowing. She headed towards him.

“What’s up?” he asked quickly.

Morgan looked sideways at Alex before she said, “Laurel, I saw her again. She spoke to me.”

Mack straightened. “What did she say?”

The sense of relief to finally be able to relax hit Morgan, and she felt hot tears spring to her eyes, ready to cascade down her cheeks. “She said that I need to go. Th—that…” She felt her words stutter.

“It’s okay, take your time,” Mack reassured.

“Alex isn’t mine, and that I…I’ve no business being…in her place.” There was no stopping the tears once she’d got it all out. She hadn’t even noticed that the music had ceased.

“What’s going on?” Alex’s voice cut through the air and Morgan turned, falling into her arms, trembling. “Hey, what’s all this?” Alex held her close, one hand protectively around the back of Morgan’s head, the other flat against her back.

“She’s back,” Morgan managed to say before Mack cut in.

“Laurel, Morgan saw her again.”

“She said, I have to go, that you’re…you’re not mine.” Morgan clung harder to Alex. “I was taking her place.”

“Good god, what is wrong with her?”

“Look, we’ve got all the doors covered. She’s not getting in. I’ll check with the hotel to see if she’s booked in.”

“What about the police?” Alex asked. “Surely they must be able to do something now?”

“I’ll inform them, and I’ll insist on having some visibility tomorrow,” Mack responded, already holding his phone. “Don’t worry, we’re going to keep you both safe.”

“Come on, let’s go back to the hotel.” Alex stood back, taking Morgan’s chin in her hand, staring deeply into her eyes. “Let’s do that, shall we? Lock the door and it will be just you and me.”

Morgan nodded and wiped her face on a tissue Mack held out for her. “Thanks. I feel like an idiot.” She sniffed.

“No, I’m the idiot. I didn’t consider for one moment that she would go after you.” Alex took her hand. “I want this stopped,” she said firmly to Mack. “It’s one thing coming after me, but she doesn’t get Morgan. That’s not the transaction.”

Chapter Fifty-Five

Morgan sat on the couch with her hand wrapped around a glass of scotch, gently sipping at it. Alex sat down beside her, the cushions shifting until she was comfortable.

They’d been back at the hotel for almost an hour. Alex had done her interviews and Francine had made sure that she had the rest of the evening and night to rest. Dinner was ordered.

“Are you alright now?” Alex asked when Morgan settled. She felt her nodding against her chest.

“Yes. I think Mack was right, it was the adrenaline. I went into the shop to—” She sat up suddenly. “I forgot all about that.” She chuckled and got up, placing the glass on the table. Her bag was on the floor by the door, where she’d dropped it in her haste to sit down and leave everything outside.

“What did you forget?”

Bringing her bag back over to the couch, Morgan rifled through it as she said, “I got you something.” She plonked back down where she’d been sitting before and held out the smaller package from inside. “It’s not anything too exciting, but—”

“You bought me something, that in itself is exciting,” Alex assured as Morgan handed it over.

“I hope you like it.”

Alex unwrapped the paper and plucked the silk square up in her fingers. The fabric slid and opened up. “It’s beautiful,” Alex said, running her fingers down the edged seam.

“You like it?”

“Yes, thank you.” Alex leaned in and kissed her gently. There was a reverence to it rather than the passionate need. Noticing the name on the tag, she said, “This must have cost—”
