At least the mechanic’s call went better. The repair was an easy, and fairly inexpensive, so I can have it back tomorrow.

Which will probably turn into the next day as Walker and I have an appointment for an ultrasound around the time we’ll beable to get my car. Now that I’ve reached twenty weeks, we can learn the sex.

And we both really want to know.

I’m so eager to see Walker, and begin the date he has planned for us, that I don’t initially hear my boss trying to get my attention.

“Sorry, Ms. Jones,” I apologize, stalling while I think of an excuse. She’s usually nice, except lately, she’s been quick to anger. Or maybe it’s just me. None of my coworkers have mentioned the change in her.

Which blows my mind considering the spiteful look she’s sending me right this moment. What the hell did I do to her?

“You will be,” she mutters, though I had to have misunderstood.

“Excuse me?”

“No. You’ve already been given too many chances. This is the last time you’ll make a fool of this company.” Having no clue what she’s referring to, I sit there, waiting to learn what she thinks I did so I can correct the mistake. When I mess up, I own it. However, I know I’ve done nothing wrong. There’s no way I’d do anything to put my job at risk while pregnant. “Figures you have nothing to say for yourself.”

“Because I don’t know what you’re accusing me of, only that I didn’t do whatever it is.”

“So, I’m a liar?”

“No, of course not.”

“Then I’m telling the truth.”

“A misconstrued one, perhaps. But if you’ll just tell me what it is, I can straighten it out.”

“Are you saying you didn’t steal from my company?”

“I beg your pardon?”

“You heard me.”

“I clearly did not. I am not a thief.”

“The discrepancy in the account shows otherwise.”

“Then show it to me. Prove it to me.” When she freezes, I know for sure something is off about this. “There is no evidence because I didn’t do anything.”

“I’m terminating you immediately.”

“You can’t do that.”

“I just did.”

“On what grounds?”

“I don’t need any. Your employment contract states either party can sever the professional relationship at any time. It’s that time.” She steps closer, her face in mine, and orders me, “Pack your shit and get the hell out of my sight.”

I’ve never called her by anything aside from her full first name or her last as a sign of respect, but eff that. “You’ll be hearing from my lawyer, Sue.” Her narrowed eyes return to me at the diminutive form, one I purposefully used because she’d admitted once that she hates it.

“We’ll see who he believes.” That final statement before she slams her office door makes no sense, not that any of this does. Maybe she’s using the pronoun he in a generic sense? She can’t possibly know that my attorney is male because I don’t have one.

My weird humor kicks in again, the coping mechanism I’ve used to get by every obstacle life has thrown my way. “Well, I was eager to get home.”

**Walker**

When Zoe texted to let me know she was leaving early, I didn’t question it. I took it as fate. Anyway, I finished what I could and was to her within fifteen minutes.
