I had all kinds of questions though when she walks out carrying a box that clearly contains personal items. I rush to take it from her, tempted to step back at the anger on her face. I know it isn’t at me, but it’s disconcerting to see it coming from her.

“What happened?” I ask once we’re pulling out of the parking lot.

She tells me and my own anger threatens to come out. “You know I didn’t do it, right?”

“Of course, I do. What did she mean by the we’ll see who he believes?”

“Your guess is as good as mine. I do need to find someone that’ll take my case, though.”

“No, you don’t. My lawyer will. I can guarantee that.”

“I thought he handled your foundation? Can he do wrongful termination stuff?” She knows all about the charity I started and why.

“If not, I’m sure he can point us in the direction of a colleague who can.”

I offer to stop for ice cream, trying to perk her up, but she declines. That’s when I know this is really bothering her. She’s been craving it the past couple days. Can’t keep enough in the house to satisfy her.

I help her inside when we get home, then remember her box is still in the trunk where I’d put it. “I’m going to put on my pjs and pout,” Zoe says when I let her know I’m going to retrieve it.

If I hadn’t seen her purse sitting on the top of it, I’d let it wait until tomorrow. There’s never been any crime that I’m aware of on my block, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. I move to press a kiss to her cheek, not the first time I’ve done so as I’ve been attempting to get her used to the intimacy in the gesture, except she turns her head and we end up kissing.

Holy fuck, her mouth feels good.

“Walker!” Suzanne screams, no doubt seeing, and pissed at, my mouth being fused to Zoe’s. Zoe’s head pops up at the shout and I assure her I’ll deal with it while I’m getting her stuff.

“I could’ve sworn…Nah, what are the odds.” Then she gives me a quick peck and walks down the hall to her room. Not that she’s been sleeping her. We’ve been sharing my bed, platonically, since we exchanged vows.

“Yes, Suzanne?” I spit out as I retrace my steps to my car. I glance up when she approaches, and catch the tail end of a smirk when she sees the box in my hands.

“Get rid of her and she can have her job back. No hard feelings.”

What the hell?

Suzanne attempts to touch my arm, though all she gets is cardboard when I shove the box between us as a barrier. “You did this? I didn’t even know Zoe worked for you.”

“And she didn’t know you were mine.”

“Because I’m not.”

“But you will be if you want her to be rehired.” Suzanne is so focused on me, and for once I’m thrilled with it, that she doesn’t see Zoe coming up behind her. Finger circling in the air on one hand to keep her talking while the other is holding her cell. My brilliant woman.

Gosh, I hope our child has her brains. That they all do as I damn well intend to give her as many as she’ll let me.

“Let me get this straight. You made up all that shit about her stealing from you because she’s with me?”

“Yes.”

“And if I break up with her and date you instead, you’ll retract it and give Zoe her job back.”

“Yes. I’ll pretend it was simply a misunderstanding and apologize. As you can clearly see, I’m good at lying when I’m motivated.”

“You’re also stupid as hell, bitch. Thanks for admitting to false firing, lying, and attempted blackmail.”

When Suzanne turns on her heel, her face contorted to match the evil person she truly is, I realize I’m going to have to do something I’ve never imagined doing. But, as I swore before, no one will hurt Zoe or our child.

Except, I don’t have to.

Zoe hauls back her arm and coldcocks Suzanne. I’m proud to see her thumb is correctly in position, too, so she won’t injure it.
