That was the last thing he wanted.

“No,” he told her. “What I meant was clean up the mess that tornado left last night.”

What did she want? The woman never called unless she had something on her mind.

“Well, I just wanted to check on you. I heard your area was hit pretty hard last night and I wanted to make certain you were okay. See if there was anything or anyone new in your life.”

There was no way he was going to tell her about Cristina because she would be calling up the newspaper and reporting it. It was better to keep things quiet until they were officially engaged to be married. And never would he tell her about Wyatt. That was between him, Cristina, and his brothers, and no one else.

Just then, Wyatt let out a squeal as his mother walked into the room, looking very tired.

“What was that?”

How did he explain this one? He didn’t.

“Thanks for calling and checking on me. I’m fine, doing great, and hope you’re doing well. Gotta run.”

“Wait,” she said. “Wait, there’s something I need to tell you.”

For a second, he was interested, but then he knew she was just trying to keep him on the phone while she figured out what was going on.

“Don’t have time,” he said. “Good-bye.”

He disconnected the phone with her still babbling.

Gazing at Cristina, he smiled as Wyatt squirmed and held out his arms.

“Oh, you’re a momma’s boy,” he said handing the child over to his mother.

“Good morning, my sunshine,” she said gazing down at him. “You’ve already had your breakfast and you’re changed. You’re ready to start the day.”

The baby cooed at her and she walked over and laid him on a blanket on the floor. He got up on his knees and started to rock.

“He’s going to be crawling soon,” Blake said. He rose from the chair and walked over to Cristina and took her in his arms. “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” she said gazing up at him. “That was quite a night.”

“A great night,” he said staring down at her. “The very best.”

And it had been. A night he would never regret.

He let his lips graze hers and then he pulled her against him. “Shame we can’t repeat it again this morning, but I need to get out and help the men clean up.”

Leaning back, she drew her brows down. “How much damage is there?”

“We lost the roof on the workers’ house, the barn is gone, and debris is scattered everywhere. One of the workers chased the horses out of the barn and they ran from the storm, but they’ve come back. We were lucky.”

With a sigh, she shook her head. “Maybe I should go. That way you can work with the men to clean up and mend everything you can. We could put off this barbecue for some other time.”

Shaking his head, he wasn’t ready for her to leave. “Or you can help the housekeeper fix us an early dinner.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes,” he said wanting her here as long as possible and for her to meet his brothers. “We’re going to eat at three so you can get on the road by five.”

It didn’t get dark until almost nine, but she would have to give Wyatt a bath and put him to bed before she could relax.

“You’re certain that’s what you want to do?” she asked.
