“Why don’t you have a girlfriend?” Her lips formed a small smile as she stared at me.

“Why don’t you have a boyfriend?” I asked.

“You’re diverting by answering a question with a question. I had one, remember?”

“Ah, yes. Quinton was his name.” I smirked.

“Answer my question, Kind. How is a guy like you single?”

“Are you asking because I’m a God in bed?”

“You’re diverting again.”

“It’s complicated.” I ran my finger along her cheek. “I’ve been burned by women before and realized relationships aren’t worth it.”

“So, you don’t trust women?”

“Something like that.” I smiled. “I’ll be right back,” I said as I climbed out of bed and pulled on my pants.

“Where are you going?”

“To my car. I planned on spending the night, so I packed a bag.”

“And if I don’t want you to stay?” Her brow arched.

“I’m pretty confident you do.” I leaned over and kissed her lips.

CHAPTER 21

Carter

“I have to go,” I said as I sipped the last of my coffee. “Have a good day.” I kissed Zoey’s lips before walking out the door.

When I climbed into my car, I called my secretary and told her I would be late because I had a stop to make before heading to the office. When I stepped inside the bank, Gracie, the bank manager, stepped out from behind her glass office.

“Mr. Kind. Good morning.” She extended her hand with a smile.

“Good morning, Gracie.” I shook her hand.

“What brings you in?”

“I need to speak with Mr. Keys.”

“Oh? May I ask what this is about?”

“It’s a personal matter.”

“Of course, Mr. Kind. Follow me. “Harvey, this is Mr. Carter Kind of Carter Management Group. He would like to speak with you.”

“Mr. Kind, please have a seat. What can I do for you?”

“A young woman was in here yesterday applying for a business loan for her bakery. You spoke to her.”

“Ah, yes. Pretty little thing. What about her?” His brows furrowed.

“Why did you turn down her loan application? Her business plan was impeccable.”

He leaned back in his chair and sighed. “She wasn’t a right fit for us. Her dream of opening a bakery is just that, Mr. Kind. We’ll lend her the money, she’ll open the bakery, it’ll fail, and then she’ll be in default. In the end, it would just get messy. We’re very careful whom we lend money to.”
