“And you know her bakery will fail, how?” I narrowed my eyes?”

“As I said, she’s a pretty little thing with a big dream. They all have big dreams.”

“You mean women?” I cocked my head.

“Just between you and me, yes.”

“So, she was right. You did deny her because she’s a woman.”

“What is this about, and why do you care so much?”

“She’s a good friend of mine, and I don’t like my friends being discriminated against. She happens to be a very intelligent woman. Not only does she have a photographic memory, but she’s also a genius with numbers. She’s one of the smartest women I’ve ever met in my life. In fact, she was a forensic accountant before she moved to L.A.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“Of course you didn’t. Because all you saw was a pretty little thing with a dream. A dream she shouldn’t have because she’s a woman.”

“I never said that, Mr. Kind.”

“The fuck you didn’t. But it all worked out anyway. Carter Management will invest in her bakery, which will be very successful.” I stood from my seat. “Shame on you, Mr. Keys. Get your head out of your ass. This is 2024.” I shook my head as I walked out of his office and into Gracie’s. “Your loan officer is sexist and denied a friend of mine a business loan yesterday because she’s a woman. I’m sure if you look back at all the loans he’s rejected, they were women who came to your bank, asking for help to start their businesses. I’m thinking that maybe this isn’t the bank my company should be dealing with.”

“Mr. Kind, hold on a second. Don’t make any rash decisions. This bank can and will accommodate all of your and your company’s needs. I apologize for how Mr. Keys handled things and will look into it immediately. I promise you that.”

“You better.” I pointed at her and walked out.

When I arrived at my office, I stopped to see Shaun. He was on the phone but signaled me to come in and sit. After ending the call, he set his phone on his desk.

“Good morning.” He smiled. “I stopped by your office earlier, and your secretary said you called and were going to be late. Did Miss Zoey Morgan have anything to do with that?”

“She had something to do with it.” I smiled. “She went to our bank yesterday and was turned down for a business loan for the bakery.”

“What the fuck. Why?” His brows furrowed.

“Her loan officer is sexist and denied her because she’s a woman. I stopped at the bank this morning to confront him.”

“And he admitted it?”

“Basically. I told Gracie she better take care of it, or I would be banking elsewhere.”

“Sterling Capital will invest in the bakery,” he said. “Fuck. I should have thought of that to begin with. Especially after everything she’s done for me.”

“No need. Carter Management is. My attorney is drawing up the business contract as we speak.”

A sly grin crossed his lips. “I thought you didn’t trust women.”

“I don’t. But this is business, and I know it’ll be worth the investment.”

He sat in his chair and stared at me.

“What?” I asked.

“You remind me of me when I invested in Jenni’s business. Look how that turned out.” He smirked.

“If I recall the story you told me, you had motives when you did that.”

“I did, but I was already falling in love with her and wanted to help her. Maybe that’s what’s going on here.”

I stood up from my chair. “Maybe you need to get back to work and stop seeing something that isn’t there.” I pointed at him as I walked out of his office.
