Lauren turns to look at me. I can see her chewing the inside of her mouth trying to stop herself from crying. “Because I can feel it. He disappeared before you left. Too much time has passed.”

I hold out my fist to her. “Come on, let me get you a drink to say thanks for looking after the old girl.”

Looking at my hand, Lauren widens her eyes, embarrassed for me. “Can I have a beer?” she asks brazenly.

My lips pull straight, and I drop my hand quickly. “A coke. You can have a coke.”

She humphs, rolling her eyes, but accepts my offer. “Might want to get Mads a coke too.”

I raise a brow.

“She wasnothappy you left so soon, andthen stayed out for three hours.”

I look at my watch as we start walking.Bollocks. “Did she say anything?”

“She didn’t have to. I can just tell. You are definitely in the doghouse.”

Great. “Listen, I’m taking her away for a night.”

“Yeah?”

At the door I push it open, holding it for Lauren to walk through. “Yeah. Tomorrow. Think you can stay here? Or I’ll have Travis watch over the house.”

Lauren laughs. “I’d love to watch you tell him that.”

Again, my brow hits the top of my head. “Meaning?”

“Meaning, big guy needs a break.” We take a few steps down the hallway leading to the main room. “You know he got shot, right?”

I jolt. My feet coming to a halt.

“Oh. Maybe you didn’t. Um, don’t tell him I told you.” She bolts ahead, scarpering out of my firing line.

My head pounds with the events of the day. Travis got shot?

Chapter Thirty-One

MADISON

“Want another?”

I look up from my empty glass.

Talia lifts the nozzle for the soft drinks, wiggling it in the air.

“Why not.” My head thumps relentlessly. I try to rub my temples, but what I really need are some painkillers. For the first time in a long time, the pain in my ribs also chose tonight to make a reappearance. I feel heavy. Tired. Fed up with feeling pissed off that as soon as we got here, Dean upped and left to meet an ‘old friend’.

I want to ask so bad what’s going on. But emotionally, I’m drained. I need to go home and sleep. He’s home. Above all else, he’s back where I need him.

“Looks like it’s going to be a late one.”

I look up to Talia.

“Got more members arriving.”

I turn and look to the door. “It’s Sunday,” I comment, still getting used to their lifestyle as a mass of men tumble through the door.

“They’ll be partying through to next weekend.”
