I decided to follow them, but not let them know I was going with them. When they entered the building, I paced in front of the door. Trying to come to a decision on whether or not I wanted to go down there to see the wolves that my uncle had put through so much.Stop being such a pussy and go down there.

Did I ever mention that I sometimes hated having another entity in my head? Well, I did. Sometimes. Opening the door, I made my way to the bottom floor. The sounds of my feet echoing off the walls should have told them I was coming down. But it seemed they were too engrossed in the conversation to even notice. That’s when I heard his voice. It had been so long since I had heard that old man’s voice.

“That is what you alphas always say to get prisoners to comply with you. What is it that you want with us?”

I leaned against the doorway as Nolen had raised his hand to his gamma and then crossed his arms over his chest and went forward to stand face to face with my old beta. I could see the expression on his face even though Nolen was in front of him. Because he had given me that look so many times in my years. I couldn’t help my smirk. He still had it in him.

“Listen, I’m not here to harm anyone of you. That is not my style and never will be. Your alpha has passed on, and I’ve come; well, we both have come to see if any of you would like to join our packs. If not, you will be rogue unless someone from another pack will take you in. What is your name, sir?”

Mumbling came from the other wolves in the cells and when Harlen stepped back, his gaze went to both Sawyer and Lucas. Pushing away from the wall, I came up beside Nolen and stared at the old man who had taught me so much while I was at my pack, crossing my arms for good measure. “Harlen, is there a reason you’re looking a gift horse in the mouth?”

“Fin! What are you doing here? I thought you had been put to death!” Harlen came back up to the bars, reaching his hand out to me. Taking hold of Harlen’s hand, I shook it. He knew I hadn’t been put to death. What was he saying? Harlen had saved me from death.

“Harlen, you realize these young pups need to go with one of these alphas. There’s no reason why you should go rogue after everything you and they have been through. Rogue is not for the faint of heart.” I encouraged Harlen. He glanced behind me to the younger alphas before bringing his gaze back to mine. I could only hope that he would do as I said. Like he had told me a long time ago he would always do as I commanded.

“Why don’t you return as Alpha of Dolostone? You understand we would be better as three packs instead of two,” Harlen answered me. I knew he would do this. He wanted me to return to my position as alpha, but could I? After everything that had happened? Could the pack trust me and would the memories of her haunt me?

“That would not be a good idea. I’ve been rogue way too long to be an alpha now.” I cocked an eyebrow at Harlen when he scoffed at me and then started to pace in his cell. The air in the room grew tense as I watched my previous Beta. I turned to leave and was halfway to the stairs when the rattle of the cell bars grabbed my attention. Turning back to him, I stared at him.

“You know you are the rightful alpha of that pack! Your uncle was never meant to have it!”

I didn’t think he would out me like that in front of Nolen and Sawyer. Because I hadn’t told them that he was my uncle. I didn’t want them to think I could be in league with him. They stared at me as I came back to him. The other wolves behind him had turned their attention to me now.

“Can you please give me the room, Nolen?” I asked. The three of them left out of the dungeons as I held his gaze. Harlen’s face was red, but his eyes were cool. This was when he was most dangerous. “Harlen, what do you want from me? I’ve changed. There’s no way I could go back and be the alpha that you think I am.”

“But you can. I’ve told the entire pack that you would be back. Because it’s your destiny. I kept the wolves here in this dungeon away from the fighting because they didn’t deserve to lose their lives to that bastard’s agenda.” Harlen pointed to wolves behind him. He was always a father figure to the pack. “The ones that fought were the ones I couldn’t convince that they wouldn’t be in trouble. But there are others on Dolostone territory that are waiting for your return!”

“I still don’t have a Luna and this was all because I chose someone. Rather than wait for my fated. How can they trust me?”

“They have prayed for your return, Fin. They are worse off than the Rhyolite wolves. We need a true alpha.” Harlen reached out and grabbed my shirt. I cocked my head and Harlen retracted his hand like I had burned him.

“Why did you say that you thought they had put me to death?”

“Because they said that they had found you in the woods and killed you.”

“And yet you still thought I was going to come back?” I crossed my arms and stared at the man in front of me.

“Yes, because the Moon Goddess came to me and told me, you would be returning. As much as I should have believed her. I couldn’t understand how she was going to bring you back to life.”

Chapter Eleven

Coming back to the Dolostone territory was nerve-wracking and a relief. I was finally coming home, and I didn’t know what I was going to find when I got there. The alliance between my pack, now that I had agreed to become alpha, and Rhyolite and Quartzite packs were tight. They had allowed me to take everyone from the dungeon with me back to my territory. Along with the ones in the dungeons at Quartzite.

Harlen sat beside me as we headed back to the pack. He had told Bella about us returning, but the rest of the pack didn’t know that I was. Bella had cried upon hearing that I wasn’t dead and that things would be almost back to normal. All that was left was to go before the pack and see if they would want me.

The SUVs entered the territory, and I spotted a few wolves at the border. I couldn’t tell if I knew them or not as we went up through the pack lands. As we reached the small town, my heart sank when the disarray of buildings came into view. Some of the wolves were on the sidewalks and stared at the shiny black SUVs that passed with disdain.

When we made it to the pack house, I thought I was going to throw up. He made sure that the place that he lived was immaculate but didn’t care about the wolves in the town. We stopped, and I spotted wolves on the top of the steps; they were all in rags that hung off them like they were two sizes too big for them. My heart sunk even further. If my uncle wasn’t already dead I would kill him again slowly.

Harlen nodded and stepped out of the SUV before I did. I noticed their expressions lighted at the sight of him. “Dolostone wolves! I have a surprise for you!”

That’s when I noticed that the wolves in the town had followed the vehicles to the pack house. I took a deep breath when Harlen motioned for me to exit the back seat. The murmurs from the wolves made my heart quicken. Would they accept me?

“I give you the rightful Alpha of Dolostone!” Harlen exclaimed with joy as I stood from the vehicle.

Gasps came from the crowd and a few of the older women wept as I scanned the pack before me. It was going to take me years to get them back to how they were and even then I didn’t think that I would be able to gain the trust of some of them.

“Alpha Fin! Harlen has told us you would come back! Praise the Moon Goddess for your return!” I knew this woman, she was the one who would always give me a candy from her store. I smiled at her and nodded. They would never get this way ever again. It surprised me that they had been able to fight.
