My father rounded the desk and sat in one of the chairs in front of me. I glanced between them both before I pulled Kalila closer to me. Her hand wrapped around my waist as her heart raced. “So I brought you both in here because we have something exciting to tell you.”

“Well, spit it out, Fin. Don’t keep us in suspense.” My mother chuckled as she leaned forward on the couch. She had come to respect my decision about making Kalila my mate. I had never seen my mother lay her elbows on her knees. That wasn’t how she was brought up.

“You will soon have a little grandpup running around,” I told them just as the doors opened and my uncle entered the room. The gleam in his eyes told me he had overheard what I said. He was the last person in the pack that I wanted to learn that I had a pup coming.

My mother jumped up and hugged Kalila, and my father came up and shook my hand. He still wasn’t too keen on my decision but he was civil about it. Uncle Wade stood by the door with a sneer. I didn’t like how he acted over the last couple of months. “Congrats, nephew! A pup is wonderful news for the pack.”

“Isn’t it, brother! How about a cigar to celebrate?” My father turned to the bookshelves and pulled a decorative box down. I didn’t expect him to be excited about it. Opening the lid, he held it out to me and then his brother. Uncle Wade took one and held it in his hand as he stared at Kalila. I didn’t miss the evil glint in his eyes.

“Why don’t we get some lunch. When I get back, I will announce the pregnancy to the rest of the pack,” I told them as I pulled Kalila to the front door. She glanced up to me with a confused look and I shook my head at her.

I really needed to learn to lock that stupid door. No, I shouldn’t have to. I was Alpha, people should knock to be able to enter that door. Whether they were family or not. Aloysius snarled in my head with agreement. He had never liked my uncle either.

“What do you mean when you get back? Where are you going, son?” My mother caught up with us as we exited the room. Her hand landing lightly on my forearm.

“I’m going to Quartzite pack to ally with them and Rhyolite tomorrow.” I told her as I headed down the hall. I made sure to say it loud enough that my uncle would hear me.

“That is a bad idea, nephew. They just want to take the neutral land, and the only way to do that is to make you believe you are allied with them.” My uncle chuckled behind me.

“Well, I think it would be a good thing to be allied with the other two larger packs,” I growled as we headed into the dining hall. My good mood from this morning was slowly dissipating as my uncle continued to butt his nose in.

Lunch was a protracted affair as I sat there with my mate and parents. Uncle Wade had left after one plate, but I didn’t like that he knew about the pregnancy. Bella was on the other side of Kalila, talking with her. Harlen kept glancing over at me from the corner of his eye. I had half a mind to send one of my best trackers to follow Uncle Wade.

It didn’t help that he knew I was leaving early in the morning to meet up with the other two packs. The lightness that I felt this morning was no longer there. A drowning feeling kept pulling me down, like something terrible was going to happen.

All the wolves in this room were laughing and having a good time. But I felt out of place in their joy. I felt like it was dimmer than it really was. Kalila’s hand slipped into mine under the table, and I glanced over at her hazel eyes. She smiled and went back to talking to Bella. The pit in my stomach only grew more prominent.

Alpha! Rogues at the border!

I sat up in bed at the urgent mind link. My heart racing as the mind link had woken me from a deep sleep. Turning to Kalila, I shook her awake, and she woke suddenly, her eyes bulging as she glanced around the dark room. Jumping from the bed, I pulled on some shorts and threw Kalila one of my shirts. “Hurry, love, I need you to get to the shelter.”

Kalila scrambled to her feet, tugging the shirt on and coming to me. We hurried down to the first-floor, omegas were rushing to and fro as they helped she-wolves and pups to the shelter behind the kitchen. A dark-haired wolf came up to us and reached for Kalila. “Alpha, let me take her to the shelter.”

I nodded and then placed a crushing kiss on my mate’s lips before letting her go. Harlen and my dad were on the porch. More warriors were amassing in front of the packhouse. I stepped up in front of my father and Beta. “Dolostone pack! Rogues are coming onto our land! What are we going to do about that?”

“Protect what’s ours!” They shouted in unison, some allowing their wolf to the surface. Howls rose in the distance.

“Good, now let’s show them why they shouldn’t be at our borders!” I shifted, and the warriors followed suit. Running full speed to the sounds of fighting, I mind-linked sections of my group.Left flank, head to the south. Right flank, head to the north. The rest of you follow me!

Wolves veered to their destinations as I continued to the heat of the battle. When I got to the fighting, I didn’t even stop to look at how many were attacking. I went headfirst into the action. Tearing into wolves that weren’t part of my pack. Blood and fur littering the ground in my wake.

My teeth sunk deep into a wolf’s neck, and I shook him until he was limp. Another wolf jumped onto my back, slashing my shoulders and back to pieces. Rolling, I threw him and jumped to my feet, ready for his next attack. My fur was matted with blood from all the wolves I had killed. But there were still white patches through the red. The wolf before me licked his lips and swished his tail as he stared at me. That deep feeling of dread swelling in my stomach. I lunged at him because to me he was part of the reason my mate was in danger right now.

FIN!Kalila’s voice screamed in my head. Fear rushed into me as I felt her panic. The brown wolf snapped his jaws as I turned and ran from the battle back to the undefended packhouse. My heart racing with my thundering paws. Pushing myself to get back to her quicker than when I left her.

Fin hurry! He’s going to kill me!Her inner voice begged me. I could hear the tears in her tone.

I dug my paws into the ground, sprinting faster than I ever thought I could run. As I rounded the corner of the house, I spotted her. She was being held by her blonde hair. Blood on her skin and clothes. I couldn’t tell if it was hers or someone else’s. Tears ran down her face as she struggled to get away. My gaze went behind her, and I snarled.

My uncle was the one holding her. A sadistic grin appeared on his face as his eyes flashed his wolf’s. I skidded to a stop; the pebbles flying around me and digging into my paws.

“Just in time, nephew! I don’t think you will need this little thing where I’m sending you.” His hands went on either side of Kalila’s face. Her hazel eyes were full of tears and sorrow.

I love you, Fin!

And just like that, he twisted. Breaking her neck right in front of me.
