Kalila’s body crumpled onto the stone steps, rolling to a stop in front of me. I nudged her shoulder with my muzzle, a whimper escaping from my throat. Kalila’s hazel eyes were still open as they stared at me. Accusing me that I didn’t protect her and our pup.

The knowing she was no longer on this earth with me came when the snap of our bond broke along with her neck. While my heart shattered inside my chest. Anger like I had never felt surged through my body. I wanted blood, but not just anyone’s, I wanted his blood.

My eyes snapped up at my uncle, and my lips pulled back off my fangs as I stalked forward. He was going to die for taking my family from me. The family that I had chosen for myself. Not a mythical goddess. Not some bond that was waiting for me. She and the little pup growing inside her were my chosen family.

Uncle Wade knew what he was doing when he brought me to this point. The sadistic smirk on his face brought me closer. I wanted his blood on this stone porch just like hers, and that was what I intended to do. Lunging, Wade shifted and met me in the air. We fought, tearing chunks of flesh and fur from each other’s bodies. Blood spilled over the once pristine river stones as teeth sunk into bodies.

I didn’t know if I would make it out alive, but at the moment, I didn’t care. All that was on my mind was his death. My uncle ceasing to live was the goal because he took them away from me. Everything around me went quiet as our battle continued. The only thing I could hear in my head was her panicked voice as I stood there. Doing nothing to get to her before he had made his move.

Not only was I mad at him, but I was also mad at myself because I couldn’t protect her. The one person that I was supposed to have given my life. Instead, she gave her life for mine. At least for now, I allowed the fury to take over me. I wanted his blood for taking them from me.

Aloysius demanded retribution now since Wade had taken his own pup from him. A life for a life, and I was all too willing to surrender to Aloysius, letting him take the life of my uncle. A small cry brought me out of my blood lust. Turning my massive head blood and saliva slung from my jaws, I spotted Sydnie on her knees beside Kalila. Her small face was full of tears.

Sharp claws swiped up along my belly, and I snarled as Harlen came up and grabbed her. Taking her away from the scene and the battle between my uncle and me. Wade rammed into me and sent me through the air before crashing onto the ground. My gaze snapped up just before Uncle Wade pulled back his large paw. Everything went black.

My surroundings were blurry as I sat up. Aloysius sat deep in my mind. Things started to become clearer the longer I blinked. The air was damp and musty, which informed me of exactly where I was at. How long I was in the dungeons under my territory, I didn’t know. But the memory of Wade snapping Kalila’s neck tortured my mind. I was too late. I should’ve known he had something to do with the rogue attack.

I kept my head low as the squeal of the door echoed off the empty brick walls. Steady footsteps made their way to my bars. His familiar scent made me lift my head and Harlen came into view, his face haggard as he stood there staring at me. “Did you know this was going to happen?”

“No, Alpha. But I need to get you out of here. He is planning on killing you tomorrow. You have to live.” Harlen’s statement brought my thoughts to how long I was out. I ran my hands over my face as he continued to stare.

“How long have I been out?” I stood, realizing that I was completely naked. Not like he hadn’t seen me. Hell, the man was there when I was born.

“Three days, Alpha.”

“Why do you keep calling me alpha. I’m no longer your alpha Harlen.” I grumbled as I paced the cell. Would it be so bad for me to die and join Kalila and our unborn pup? I didn’t think so. It wasn’t like my mate was out there.

“Because you will always be my alpha. Wade was never in line for the title and will never be alpha. You have too many loyal pack members. Now come on, I have a pair of shorts and a shirt for you. You need to get out of here.” The door to my cell opened, and Harlen came up to me with clothes. Staring between him and the garments in his hands, I backed away. I didn’t want to run, I wanted to die and be again with my mate and child.

“I don’t run, Harlen.” I crossed my arms and stood there waiting for him to turn around and leave me to my fate. The glare that he sent my way was something I had never seen him do before in my life. It would have scared me into submission if I were a lesser wolf.

“Listen here, boy! I know you think Kalila’s death was your fault, but it wasn’t. You have other lives that need to be saved from this tyrant, and if not you, then who? So, get your ass in these clothes, and you get out of here until we can get you back in power.” Harlen had stalked up to me, making himself look bigger than he was while he stuck his finger in my face and he shoved the clothes in my hands, “If you make it to where my daughter, mate, and unborn pup have to stay in her family’s pack, I swear I will never forgive you.”

Harlen must’ve thought fast at the decision. I personally was glad that Sydnie would be fine, and so would his mate.Would it be too bad to run? So that we can regroup?Aloysius asked me as I mulled things over. If I ran, would the loyal wolves think I was a coward? Or would they wait until I came back to take back my title? My eyes locked with his, and I nodded. “Fine, I’ll leave. But you must stay so the loyal wolves know they haven’t been abandoned.”

“You know I would never go against a command,” Harlen answered as I pulled the shirt over my head. He grabbed my upper arm and ushered me through the bars while he picked up a blanket and threw it over me. We headed up the cool stairs and through the door that led to topside. Not one guard was by the door as we exited the dungeons, the stars in the sky were dim as I took them in. The full blue moon hung in the sky with the stars.

Scanning my surroundings, I glanced over to Harlen, who nodded, and I took off to the east as Harlen made his way back to the packhouse. I turned at the tree line and looked back at my home before stripping out of the clothes that Harlen had given me. This would be the last time I would be here.

I shifted in one deft motion, grabbed the clothes and blanket in my teeth before sprinting away into the night.

Aloysius was a beautiful wolf with solid white fur and ocean-blue eyes. A complete opposite to me in human form with my black hair and brown eyes. We are polar opposites, he and I. It had been a few weeks since I had escaped from Dolostone pack with the help of Harlen. I had thought about hiding out at his mate’s family’s pack but then thought better of it. So the past few weeks, I roamed the wilderness, trying to figure out what I needed to do next.

Tonight, I sat at a bar in the middle of nowhere, drinking bourbon. It needed to be renovated, but it was fine under the circumstances. The owner allowed me to take a shower and chill for a few hours. Which was nice of him because I was starting to stink and bathing in the river was becoming a chore. Being on the run wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. That was for sure.

A cute little blonde kept eyeing me from across the room. She sort of looked like Kalila if only her eyes weren’t brown. She came up to me, running her long slender fingers across my shoulder blades. “I’ve not seen you around here before.”

I stared at her as she sat down to my right, her hand playing on my thigh. It had been so long since I had been with anyone. Not like it mattered anymore who I was with. My chosen mate was gone. The fated mate that the Moon Goddess promised all wolves was nowhere to be seen. Why not have some fun? “No, I’m not from around here.”

She giggled, in a high-pitched attention seeking sound, another thing that wasn’t Kalila. It was all wrong the sound. I allowed my eyes to roam her body. Taking in her outfit. Its blue fabric was skintight, insinuating her curves as she sat there. I took a deep breath. Breathing in her scent. She was rogue like me now. Her brow tweaked up along with the corner of her red stained mouth. “Then why don’t we go upstairs and have some fun. I’ve not felt an aura like yours in a long time.”

Downing the rest of my bourbon, I left the empty glass and the last of my cash on the counter. The blonde she-wolf took me by the hand and led me up the rickety stairs. Down a hall that needed its wallpaper redone as spots of it were torn and sagging. I brought my attention back to the rogue she-wolf who had my hand. If I didn’t look her in the eyes, I could pretend that she was Kalila. I followed her into the room and shut the door behind me.

The room was small with a single full-size bed in the middle of it. Curtains that could use a wash hung in the window. The smells from this room told me that I wasn’t the only male that this she-wolf had brought up here. She glanced over her shoulder and winked as she peeled off her outfit.

Pulling my shirt over my head, I stalked over to the full-size bed she crawled onto, undoing my jeans and I dropped them to the outdated carpet. She lay there on her back, her small frame on display as she started to play with herself. Cocking my head I watched her for a few moments as her fingers slipped inside of her cunt. I flipped her over onto her stomach and brought her to her knees.

I didn’t say anything to her as I filled her from behind, my hand pressing her head into the mattress. Her moans sounded out as I assaulted her pussy. She tightened around me as her muffled whimpers made their way to my ears. The friction built up as I hit her cervix with each thrust.
