Page 62 of The Fallen Alpha

I walked between the hanging and broken doors. The place inside looked just as run down as the rest of the pack territory. Walls had fire marks racing up to the ceiling and some of the floor was missing in certain areas. Why did that tyrant take this small pack? What would it give him?

Continuing down the halls I came to a room, its doors no longer on its hinges and laying on the floor. I could tell that this was the alpha’s office. But everything in it was either gone or burnt. Did they take the stuff or…? Everything was a question. But nothing gave me information.

“I searched this place along with my pack. I didn’t find anything.” Fin’s voice startled me. I had been so consumed with my thoughts that I didn’t even know that he was behind me.

“So why did you leave the buildings? Why not just demo them?” I turned to him and I could see the sorrow in his eyes. Was it for me or her? The thought of his chosen being from here made me wonder if he kept it like it was since it reminded him of her.

“I don’t know why. But I did and then I pushed this place to the back of my mind.” Fin stayed in the doorway as I continued to roam the room while keeping an eye on the floor.

I nodded before stopping and staring at the wall I tilted my head as I tried to figure out why the candlestick sat untouched on the burnt bookshelf. Everything in this office was in ruins but that simple item was there sparkling in the sunlight. My feet moved first to the silver candlestick, my hand reached out on its own and touched the cold metal with my fingertips.

Glancing over my shoulder I noticed Fin’s eyes widened before I gripped it and pulled. The sound like an airlock escaped as the bookshelf opened and ground across the floor. I peeked in before Fin’s hand gripped my shoulder and held me in place.

“I don’t think so feisty Luna. I go first.” Fin opened it more just as Olli came in and stopped.

Fin disappeared behind the door and I followed him in and what I saw made me stop where I was. Everything that was supposed to be in the office and possibly the alpha bedroom was untouched in this safe room. Pictures of the previous alphas and books were stacked along the walls. I went up to a table that held what looked like a journal.

My hand caressed the teal leather, the designs on the front were worn from years of use. It looked like it used to have a ribbon to hold it together. Frayed silver ribbon hung from the journal. I picked up the book and opened it to the front page.

Beautiful script handwriting graced the antique paper. The nameKatonawas fading on the page. I glanced up to Fin and Olli from the journal. They both stared at me, Olli looked from the journal to me as I closed it and pulled it to my chest.

“I never would’ve thought there was a secret door in this room.”

“Alpha Cain was always doing something to the packhouse. Especially since the first child was lost.” Olli answered as he looked around the room.

“So you didn’t know that this room was here?”

“No. I think it needs to remain our secret. It could be used to keep people that don’t know about it away from a certain Luna.”

I glared at Fin and Olli. If they thought I was going to run and hide they were sorely mistaken. Resting one hand on my hip I pointed the journal to them both. “I don’t know what you think you two are planning but I will not hide when I can help protect my pack.”

“Nikita, if you are pregnant or get pregnant you won’t be able to shift. I know you are a strong wolf and we both know that you are an alpha by blood. But you will need to be protected. I can’t lose you or any unborn pup.” Fin’s eyes were watery as he held my gaze.

Would it be so bad to heed his wishes? You know that he has experienced a loss like that before and I feel like it would break any alpha. If it didn’t then he has no heart.Enyo popped up in my head. I sighed.

“Fine,IFI’m pregnant then I will come here and stay. BUT if I’m not I will be on the front lines with you protectingourpack.”

“I can work with that, my feisty Luna.” Fin came up to me and pulled me into a hug. He always made me not so mad at him when he did this. “But in the meantime I will try to put a pup in you to keep you safe.”

“You are one hundred percent a male.” I huffed as I pushed him away from me to head further in the room that had old things that the previous alpha had collected. Fin chuckled and followed me around the room.

Pictures of the previous alpha and luna sat in a box. Detailing their life. I found one where she was pregnant and I wondered if that was me or the sibling that I will never get to meet. They looked happy that she was with pup. So why did they use me as a bargaining chip to Alpha Christian?

I hoped to the Goddess that the journal in my arms would let me get to know my biological mom and dad. Fingering the photo of them I grabbed it as well and placed it in my arms. Everything else in this safe room was just random things that didn’t hold too much interest to me.

“I think I want to go home.” I turned to Fin and he nodded.

Leading both Fin and Olli out of the room, Fin shut the door behind us and the scraping across the floor wasn’t so loud as it was when it opened. The candlestick gleamed in the fading light from the sun. I hadn’t realized that we had been here for most of the afternoon.

After dinner I stood at my side of the bed staring at the young wolves in the photo along with the journal. I wanted to sit down and see what her life was like through her words. At the same time I didn’t want to find out why she gave me up.

“You keep staring at it, you won’t ever know if that thing will answer any of your questions.”

I didn’t turn to Fin and I picked up the old journal. Taking in a deep breath I plopped down on the bed and crossed my legs. I glanced up to Fin and the small grin spurred me to open it.

“I’ve never been so undecided about things, Fin. What if what’s in this journal makes things even worse than not knowing?”

Fin came up to me and sat down beside me. His arm wrapped around my shoulder and pulled me close to him. “But what if it tells you why and it makes sense?”
