“Food’s ready!” I interrupted, and I could feel my cheeks flush in embarrassment. I needed to have a serious talk with Brian about the kind of things he was allowed to say around my son and I didn’t want to hear Nate’s opinion about me.

I saw him lean forward and whisper something in Niel’s ear. Niel giggled as he covered his mouth and nodded, putting his hand out and Nate leaned his ear closer to his mouth, giving him his turn to whisper.

How close could they be already that they were whispering stuff to each other?

They both giggled and pretended to zip their mouths and throw the keys away, Nate got up while still carrying Niel. He threw him over his shoulder and my son squealed excitedly as he hung off Nate’s shoulder.

I should have been seriously concerned, but I just felt happy. They got along so well!

Nate put Niel on the chair next to him and I pulled my chair opposite them, which surprised me. Just how much had they played that was so much fun that Niel was okay with not sitting beside me?

We ate dinner together and time and time again, the boys would look at each other after staring at me silently and giggling. They had done this quite a few times and finally, at the end of dinner, I slammed my fork down and tilted my head to the side.

“What is it? Does my food taste funny?” I asked and they both shook their heads as they pushed their plates forward. Nate leaned back on his chair and Niel copied him as they both rested their hands on their bellies breathing out a long breath.

“It was amazing, thank you. Home-cooked meals are really the best,” Nate said as he patted his belly and Niel copied him as he giggled.

“Mommy is the best!”

“You’re right.” Nate nodded as he faced Niel. “Mommy is the best.”

“What were you guys whispering about?” I asked as I got up, trying to seem as if I wasn’t excited about how my favorite men hadn’t just complimented me.

“It’s a secret.” Niel indicated to his zipped mouth and waved his hands showing that he didn’t have a key.

Wow, Nate managed to get my son to keep a secret from me.

“I can do the dishes,” Nate offered as I gathered the plates and I shook my head, beckoning him to sit down.

“Don’t worry about it. Should I bring you some water?” I asked as I dumped the dirty dishes into the sink.

I turned to face Nate and he looked surprised. I tilted my head to the side as I pointed to the fridge.

I laughed as I watched a pink color tint his cheeks and he nodded. “Would you like some water, Nate?”

“Please and thank you,” he choked and Niel giggled as he lightly slapped his back. I placed the water in front of them and they both thanked me as they gulped down their drinks.

This wasn’t so bad. Perhaps if I explained it to him he would understand. Ibelievehe would understand why I kept it from him all these years. But what if he hates me for it?

Ugh, why was this so hard?

“So, will you be coming to the game this Saturday, Avery?” Nate asked and I leaned against the countertop nodding.

“Yeah, I’ll be working.”

“Will you be taking pictures of us?” he teased and I shook my head smiling.

“No, my job entails much more than just pictures. Why? Did you want me taking pictures of you while you whoop-ass?” I joked and he nodded, with a serious look on his face.

“Yes, I want you watching me.”

My eyes widened and I looked away from him as I scratched my nose. What was that?

“And you, my favorite little man, will you be coming?”

“Only if Mommy says I can go,” Niel murmured as he played with his water bottle.

“Well, what do you say, Mommy? Can Niel come watch us play?”
