“Theo said they are on a loop. Good to go.” Alejandro whispered through the dark and I heard the soft sound of a bullet leaving a gun with a silencer.

Fuck.

Someone was dead.

All hell broke loose as I heard shouting from the rear of the property, the Serpents had obviously gone in.

I followed the others as they burst through the door and Hamish grabbed my chest, shoving me into the wall as gunfire was unleashed and men screamed.

Through it all, I watched her.

She was like a vengeful fury, her face and eyes cold as she ducked and weaved, shooting people as she went.

When her gun was out of bullets, I watched with morbid fascination as she pulled two knives from her thighs.

Two fucking big-ass knives that she used with expert precision. Why the hell was Leo bothering to train her when she was already so damn good?

I followed Hamish as we moved into the next room, moving past the fallen bodies of men, a trail of blood and screaming left behind her wake as she cut through them.

I watched as the men on our side began to slow down, everyone watching her as she set her sights on the final two men guarding a door that looked reinforced.

“You have two options. Move and live long enough to say goodbye to anyone you care about or stay and die.” She said with a sweet voice, her knives by her side as she stood there in the center of the room.

They raised their guns and she laughed.

“Good choice. I need the exercise.” She said before she rushed them so fast that they stumbled back.

They shot at her, and my heart leaped into my chest as I watched her arm get knocked back before she swung one of her knives out in a graceful arc and sliced through the man’s wrist.

He screamed and dropped to his knees, gripping his arm as he stared at the blood pouring from him.

She didn’t give him a chance to react before slicing his throat then hauled his body up to block the other man’s gunshots, using him as a human shield.

She tossed him toward his friend who stumbled back with the weight, and I had a moment of amazement at how damn strong she was to even throw the man twice her size around.

Why had I doubted her?

She gripped the other man by the hair, ripping his head back, and stabbed him straight through the throat, smiling as she did.

“Wow. It’s like beautiful artwork.” Dante muttered from my side, and I glanced at him, noticing movement behind him, and watched in horror as one of the fallen men raised his gun, pointing it at Katerina.

I didn’t think as I raised my gun and pulled the trigger, watching as he slumped back to the ground, and everyone turned to look at me.

“Well done,” Dante said with a nod as he leaned down to check the guy.

My hands shook as I watched, the realization that I had just killed a man settling in.

“Riley… are you okay?” Katerina asked softly as she came over to me and I stared at her.

She was covered in blood, the smears on her face making her look like what I imagined the Valkyrie would look like after battle but the concern in her eyes was what worried me.

I couldn’t let her think this was too much.

“I… yes. He was going to kill you.” I whispered and she nodded.

“You saved me.” She said slowly and I swallowed, finding a little compartment inside my brain to shove this inside.

I could deal with it.
