“You will,” Crew countered, almost sounding happy, “because I’m her alpha, and I have a duty to shoot you in the fucking skull to protect my omega. Don’t think I won’t be notifying your supervisors of your offer to let one of the alphas from your pack comfort my omega.”

The main guard stiffened, his gaze swinging to Dr. Labine. “Is this true, sir?”

“Absolutely not,” Dr. Labine refuted. “Ask my nurse.” He waved a hand at Isla, who had been cowering in the background. She let out a little squeak as attention shifted to her.

“Ma’am?” The guard raised his eyebrows.

Isla wrung her hands. “I… Well, that’s not exactly what happened. Miss Jones was clearly in distress, and there is precedence for using an alpha to calm a hysterical omega?—”

Crew let out a threatening growl, and I tugged on the edge of his boot. I hated that he was upset.

Without looking, Crew reached out, cupping his hand around the back of my head. I leaned against him, my energy gone as I watched the people around me like it was a play and not my life.

Isla’s face turned beet-red and she hurried to finish her answer. “He did offer to call in one of his pack to assist Miss Jones, but I doubt?—”

“Are we done here?” Crew demanded, his hand going back to rest on his gun.

“For the moment,” the guard agreed with a nod. “We’ll see about having your omega moved to the pack unit. We will need to clear all of this with our bosses, and there will likely be more questions.”

“Not a problem.” Crew sounded so sure.

“Doc? It’s time to go,” the guard said, stepping aside in a clear you leave first kinda way.

Dr. Labine stared at me. “Hazel, you have to speak up if you want my help.”

I shook my head. Even if I had the strength to get up, I knew I wanted to stay close to Crew.

My life had been so turbulent, so chaotic, for so long, I didn’t even know what normal was anymore. But what I did know was that Crew made me feel safe. I didn’t want to be anywhere that he wasn’t.

Dr. Labine’s face fell as I rejected him. With a heavy sigh, he stormed out of the room.

Isla stayed as far away from Crew as possible while moving toward the door. “I’ll see about getting Miss Jones moved immediately.”

“Good idea,” Crew muttered, waiting until she was gone to lean over and grab the edge of the door. He looked ready to slam it shut, but his gaze dipped to me and I watched some of the fury drain away. He pushed the door with just enough force for the latch to catch when it closed.

My eyes drifted shut, humiliation burning through me. “I’m so sorry.”

Crew crouched in front of me, claiming my hand when I tried to pull away. “Why are you sorry, little one?”

“That you had to lie for me,” I whispered. “That you almost got in trouble. That?—”

“Hazel, I need you to listen to me, okay?”

I opened my eyes to see his blazing as he watched me.

When he knew he had my attention, he resumed speaking. “A lot has changed since you went missing. I promise you you’re safe with me and my pack, but for now, it’s best that the hospital, hell that the entire damn world, thinks you’re promised to us.”

I tried to speak, but the words caught in my throat. Disappointment settled like a heavy blanket around my shoulders, and I was glad my ass was still on the ground because there was no way I could’ve stood up under it.

Of course Crew was just claiming to be my alpha to help me out. He probably felt like he owed it to me because he’d known me since I’d been in diapers.

It had absolutely nothing to do with me.

“Do you understand, little one?” Crew studied me without blinking.

I slowly gave a nod.

I understood.
