She sounds so scared and lost. She’s the last bit of family I have left and I can’t lose her too. I just can’t.

We end the call and I grab my duffle bag, my mind already making lists of what I need to do. I grab my laptop, book a ticket back to Los Angeles, and then wipe the tears from my eyes as I start to pack.

I managedto convince Gunner to cover for me at work this afternoon so I could head out early and spend some more time with my mate. I stopped to grab us dinner with the hope that we wouldn’t need to leave the bed for the rest of the night.

I nod at a few pack members as I walk through the ski resort lobby and hit the button for Cameron’s floor. I juggle the bag of food as I ride up to her floor. She’s room number four fifteen, and I knock on the door, waiting impatiently for her to answer. My wolf paces inside me, just as eager to see our mate as I am.

Finally, the door swings open and the smile drops off my face when I see her open duffle bag on the bed behind her.

“What’s with the bag? Why are you packing?” I ask, trying to ignore the panic that is starting to grow inside of me.

My wolf whines, pawing at me to make her stay, to fix whatever has gone wrong.

“Are you moving in with me? It’s about time,” I try to joke, but worry is starting to clog my throat, making my voice sound more stressed than lighthearted like I was going for.

“No, I… I have to go.”

“Go where?”

“To Los Angeles. My friend, Frankie, called and she needs me. I have to go help her. I need to get back to my real life,” she says as she finishes stuffing her toiletries into her bag.

No.

That’s all I can think.

My whole brain seems to shut down as I watch her move around the room, gathering all of her things. Soon, it looks like any other hotel room and I start to really freak out when I realize that she could be gone from my life without a trace.

What do I do?

I’ve been shot at and almost blown up, and I handled those situations just fine. I was trained for it. I knew what to do. Being here with my mate leaving, though, and I freeze up.

Make her stay!My wolf growls at me.

“Thisis real life. This is real between us. You can’t just leave,” I try to argue with her.

“I have to. Frankie needs me.”

“I need you too.”

“I… I’ll call you. I already booked my ticket. I have to go,” she says apologetically, and I stand there, frozen, as she grabs her bags and rushes past me.

The door closes behind her softly, and I stare at the smooth wood, trying to figure out what happened and how everything went so wrong.

What do I do now?

I rub absently at my chest, trying to ease the ache there, but there’s no fixing this broken heart.

She needs to help her friend. Then she’ll be back,I tell myself, but the words feel hollow.

I seem to move on autopilot as I head back down to the lobby and then to my truck. I drive back across town and park outside of the Mountain Rescue headquarters.

When I walk in, all of the guys are there and they turn to me. Alec, the only Marine amongst us is already eyeing the now cold bag of food, and I toss it at him before I collapse on the couch next to him.

“What’s going on? I thought I was covering your shift today,” Gunner grumbles from his place in the recliner.
