“She left.”

“Who?” Alec asks before he shoves another bite of food into his mouth.

“Cameron. My mate. She packed up and left.”

“What? Why?” Niko asks as he comes out of his office.

“She said that her friend needed her,” I say, and I barely recognize my own voice.

There’s no emotion there; it’s like she took all of that, along with my heart, when she left.

“Okay… why didn’t you go with her?” Gunner asks like it’s obvious.

“I—”

Shit. Why didn’t I go with her? Why didn’t I think of that in the moment?

Because we were too focused on the fact that she was leaving without a word.

“I… didn’t think of that,” I admit, and my friends all look at me like I’m an idiot.

To be fair, I am an idiot.

“She just said that her friend needed her, and I don’t know, it just all caught me so off guard. All I could think about was getting her to stay here.”

“Why did her friend need her?” Ash asks.

“I don’t know. She’s mentioned her a few times over the last few days, but just that she’s her best friend and they grew up together.”

“So, your mate left in a hurry to go be with her best friend, and you let her go alone to do that when your mate could be going into a dangerous situation or one where she needs you emotionally,” Gunner summarizes, and I think that it’s the most that I’ve ever heard him speak.

“I…”

Shit.

“I need to go,” I blurt out, leaping to my feet.

“We’ll cover for you the next few days. Go get your mate,” Niko calls after me as I sprint out the door.

I’m grateful for my friends and that they’re willing to take my shifts.

I just hope I can fix things with Cameron while I’m away.

“I don’t thinkthat this is working,” Frankie whispers to me, and I nod.

“I don’t either.”

I’ve been tense and on edge ever since she called me to come back to Los Angeles. I don’t know why I didn’t think about it, but I should have just bought Frankie a plane ticket and told her to meet me in Alaska. I wasn’t thinking though.

Now I’m here in Los Angeles, scared of Frankie’s father and his friends and missing my mate.

It’s only been twenty-four hours, but I miss Davis so much. I’ve been staying busy, doing my best to protect Frankie and distract us from the weird energy coming from her father and his friends. I’m clearly not succeeding at either.

“We need to leave,” I whisper to her, and she glances nervously at her bedroom door.
