We’ve been holed up in her room since I got here, avoiding the scary-looking men that always seem to be coming and going. Frankie’s father has had her on lockdown, even more so thanusual, and we both know that something is up with him. We also both know that it can’t be good.

“How? They’re always watching me.”

“We can go out. Say that we’re getting our nails done or something. He’s allowed that before. Then we just make a run for the airport. We can buy new things wherever we go.”

“He’ll stop us,” she argues.

“We can go somewhere safe.”

Frankie chews on her bottom lip as she debates what to do.

“It’s worth a shot,” she finally whispers, and I feel like I take my first deep breath in a day.

We share a nod, and then both of us sneak toward her bedroom door. She pulls it open a crack, and we listen to hear if her dad is alone or not.

“…no, the deal has already been made. Frankie will belong to Randall by the end of the week.”

Frankie and I share startled looks, and I can tell that she’s freaking out.

Her dad is selling her to one of his friends? That’s certainly what it sounds like, but what kind of person could do that?

Frankie’s father isn’t a person, though. He’s a monster.

“We have to go. Now,” I whisper to her, grabbing my duffle bag.

She nods, and we walk as silently as we can towards the stairs. My bag hits the back of my legs, and I tighten my grip on the strap. Her father is still on the phone, and we move as quickly as we can down the stairs towards the front door. He must be really concerned with his call because his voice rises as we reach the front door, and Frankie and I take off.

We race out onto the street and I realize that we should have ordered an Uber before we made a dash for it.

A truck pulls up, and fear grips me. Is this Randall or one of Frankie’s father’s friends?

Then the door opens and Davis rushes towards us. Shock and relief slam into me when I see him, and I almost collapse from the combination of emotions.

“Cameron! What’s wrong, baby?” He asks, and I know that I must look freaked out.

“We need to get out of here.”

He nods, opening the passenger door for us, and Frankie and I both jump in. He slips behind the wheel, and we take off.

“Um, Frankie, this is Davis. Davis, this is my best friend, Frankie.”

“Nice to meet you,” Davis says as we race down the street.

“How did you find me?” I ask him as he drives through traffic.

“I called Gunner. He was able to track your cell phone.”

Thank God, I think.

“Where to?” He asks us.

“Um… I’m not sure,” I admit.

“Okay. What’s going on? What are you running from?”

I glance at Frankie, silently asking for permission to tell him about what’s going on, and she nods.

“Frankie’s dad is a real piece of work. We hate him. He’s… he’s just bad. He’s made a deal with one of his friends to trade Frankie for… something. My guess is money, but we can’t let that happen.”
