Davis nods, and I take a moment to study him. He looks even better than I remember. He’s wearing jeans and a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Lust slams through me as I take in his strong forearms.

“What are you doing here?” I ask him.

“I came to see you. I thought that you might need me. I should have gone with you when you first left.”

“Don’t you have work?”

“You’re more important.”

“Where are we going, Frankie?” I ask, turning to my friend. “It’s not safe here or anywhere you’ve been with your father.”

“Alaska,” Davis says. “We’ll go to Alaska. She can stay with us. We’ll keep her safe. I’ll have everyone in the p-, er, town keeping an eye out for any suspicious tourists.”

I want to jump to agree with his suggestion because I’m dying to go back to Alaska to be with Davis, but I need to make sure that my friend is on board with that plan. I need to make sure that she’s safe.

I look to Frankie to make sure that she agrees with his plan and she nods quickly.

“I trust him if you do,” she says.

“I do,” I tell her.

“Alright, to the airport it is then.”

I pull out my phone, booking three tickets to Alaska. Davis pulls up to the rental car building, and we all hop out. I turn to Frankie as Davis goes to return the car keys.

“Are you okay? I mean, I know that’s a crazy question, but I had to ask.”

“I’m alright now that we’re out of there. Are you sure that Alaska is going to be safe?”

“Yeah, Davis is… he works with a bunch of ex-military men. They’ll be able to keep you safe. I promise.”

I want to tell her about Davis and his friends being shifters. I want to tell her all about shifters and fated mates and all of it, but I can tell that she’s freaked out enough without me adding all of that on top of it.

“Ready?” Davis asks when he comes back out and joins us.

“Yeah, let’s go.”

He takes my hand, and we walk the short distance to the airport terminal to check in. Getting through security is pretty easy since only Davis and I have bags. Luckily for us, Frankiehad her ID in her phone case, and we manage to make it through security and to our gate with twenty minutes to spare.

“I’m going to run to the bathroom,” Frankie says, and we nod, standing by the wall next to our gate.

The bathroom is just a couple of feet down, and we watch until she disappears. Then Davis is turning to me.

“Are you okay?” He asks me, and I nod.

“I am now,” I tell him, and I mean it.

I was so scared these last twenty-four hours, but now, being with Davis, all I feel is safe and cared for.

I love him and I can’t lose him. I know that now. I just need to tell him.

Davis

“You looked soscared when I pulled up.”

“I was,” she tells me honestly. “Her dad has always scared both of us. That’s why I raced back to Los Angeles when she called. I just… I need to make sure that she’s safe.”
