I crouch next to her and make us a fire, but she’s still shaking, so I head into the kitchen.

“I have coffee or some tea,” I tell her.

“Coffee, please.”

I turn the coffee pot on and tap my foot impatiently until it’s done brewing. I almost burn my hand trying to pour her a cup and then carry it back to her.

She’s sitting on the floor by the fire now, and I pass her the mug.

“I’ll get you a change of clothes. You need to get out of that wet stuff. Then I’m going to check your ankle.”

“Are you a doctor?” She asks curiously, and I shake my head.

“No, but I’ve gotten enough field training between working for Mountain Rescue and my time in the Army.”

She nods slightly, and I hurry into my room to grab her clothes. When I come out, she’s taken off her snow pants and down jacket. She laid her hat and gloves by the fire to dry, and she pulled her sweatpants up to examine her ankle.

“I just rolled it,” she tells me, and I pass her the clothes.

“Are you a doctor?” I ask her, and she laughs.

“No, but I know enough to tell if it’s broken or sprained, and it’s not.”

“I’d still like to check.”

She nods and holds her foot out to me. I run my hands over her smooth skin, testing her ankle, but she doesn’t seem to bein any pain. There’s no swelling or discoloration, so I nod and reluctantly let her go.

“Where should I change?” She asks me, and I nod to a door down the short hallway.

“Bathroom is right there.”

“Thanks.”

She takes a big gulp of coffee and then stands. I hover over her, ready to catch her in case her ankle hurts, but she walks slowly towards the bathroom just fine.

I clean up the kitchen while she changes. I was running late this morning, and the dishes from breakfast are everywhere. I don’t want my mate to think I’m a slob, so I hurry to scrub the pans and load the dishwasher.

“How far is the ski resort from here?” She asks me as she comes into the kitchen.

“About a mile or so.”

“I should probably get out of your hair and head back there.”

“You can rest a while,” I tell her, and she smiles.

“I don’t want to intrude.”

“You’re not! It’s nice to have some company,” I tell her honestly.

“Okay then… I’m Cameron, by the way.”

Cameron.

I roll her name around in my head, loving the sound of it.

“I’m Davis,” I tell her, and she smiles softly at me.

“Nice to meet you. Have you lived here long?”
